Does the newgen water pump fit the pregen bike?

After all the issues, troubles (both from my bike and my own mistakes), I've finally narrowed down the issue to my mysterious coolant leak: my water pump. I took the thing out today and it looks like the pump (fan? not sure what to call the thing inside) seems to be bent and not turning properly sides. The inside walls seeme to be scored as well.

I've looked online and it seems that kawasaki switched to a different type of water pump in the later model of the 250s and they share the same part number. It's also significantly cheaper to buy the pump from the newgen models.

The one on my bike seems to have been replaced with the new gen water pumps (it has a different o-ring than the schematic for my year) so I'm wondering if it's interchangeable or someone who owned/worked on this bike made a mistake.

The ordernr. for the pregen is 49044-1064 and the newgen is 49044-1086, but the o-rings are the same.
For the pregen you can look here: http://www.rcramer.com/bikes/ex250/parts/radiator.html
But also since this website doesn't look like it's the newest maybe you better ask your Kwaki-dealer.

2006 EX250 - Water pump assembly part number is 49044-1086

2009 EX250 - Same part number (Look at the list below the diagram)

Here's a used one that would probably also work for you:

I'm yet to replace this part on my bike, but it appears that it fits onto the engine similar to the way the oil pump would fit on old school big block Mopars, where it's driven off of the crank via a shaft, vs. a an external belt.

You'll also notice that it doesn't have any sort of gasket for interfacing with a coolant jacket in the engine block. If you're having a leak where coolant is leaking into the crankcase oil, then one of the following is your problem:

1. The leak is not actually at the water pump. (Cracked block or head, leaking head gasket, or something)
2. The pump housing itself is cracked along the portion that sticks into the crankcase.
3. The seal on the water pump shaft has failed, allowing coolant to leak past it.

Given this, I would ask you, what makes you so sure the problem is the water pump, and not something else?

Between 2000 and 2001 the part number changed from 49044-1064 to 49044-1086. Newgen pump is the same part number as 2001-2007 pregen. If it were me, I would buy the newgen pump with good confidence that it would fit.

Update: Just replaced it today and it does work 100%. A lot of part sites list the old water pump as obsolete as well, so that's just another point backing up the interchangeability.

Also a note to anyone trying to fix their water pumps: If the water pump fan is angled incorrectly in the body of the pump that means the bearing is most likely shot or your pump is completely fubar.

You should just go ahead and buy a replacement since the water pump uses a mechanical seal and requires a ton of effort to take apart when a working used pump can be bought for cheap on ebay.
