Race Tyres 2020

I'm not racing this year, going to focus intentionally on training and getting coaching. Doing many CSS and codeRACE events, along with Ken Hill trackdays and private lessons from various instructors.

Going to use these tyres this year:

- trackdays & practice (~30 days)= Dunlop Q3+ - 110/70-17 & 150/60-17 on 17x3.0/4.5" wheels

- class & lessons (~10 days) = some of following
Pirelli Diablo Superbike SC1/SC1 or SC1/SC2 - 110/70-17 & 140/70-17 on 17x3.0/4.0" wheels
Bridgestone R11 - 110/70-17 & 140/70-17 on 17x3.0/4.0" wheels
Dunlop KR448/451 0129/0129 or 0129/0455 - 110/70-17 & 140/70-17 on 17x3.0/4.0" wheels
Bridgestone V02 soft/soft or soft/med - 90/580R17 & 120/600R17 on 17x2.75/3.5" wheels
Dunlop Moto3 soft/soft - 90/80-17 & 115/70-17 on 17x2.75/3.5" wheels
I'm planning on getting better at controlling tyre slides at limit. Then I'll be able to progress to fastest racing-slick tyres. Too bad Sava/Mitas stop production of their slicks...

PMT now makes a Moto3 slick I believe - their 12 inch options are quite good.

Question

DannoXYZ, where did you get that 4.5 inch rear rim? Are you hoping to get 30 days out of a set of Q3s?

Question

DannoXYZ, quick question.... I see that the Dunlop Moto 3 front only mounts on a rim sized 2.15 - 2.50? Have you or anyone else had experienced running it on a 2.75 front wheel?

I was contemplating running the moto 3’s on my 250 but was concerned when I read the specs on the Dunlop site. https://www.dunlopracing.com/product/moto3/

Thanks, any feedback appreciated.

I got set of Velg vRossi wheels in 17x3.0/4.5”. There was guy that imported them quite few years back. Actually saves couple lbs over stock. Unfortunately they came with crap bearings that lasted only couple hundred miles. Which kinda killed sales I think. So I got them 2nd-hand and spent 15-minutes replacing bearings and they’re good as new!

Yes, I can get 30-days out of Q3+. Got entire season ~50 days out of set of Alpha-13 couple years ago. What really kills tyres are too much trail-braking and skipping rear-tyre or sliding under braking. I find I get faster laptimes by braking less! Now I go flat-out in corners where I used to do massive braking and downshifting. I’ll post some tyre photos in other thread.

Oh I see kool regarding the 4.5 inch rear. Nice pick up!

Another reason to love these little bikes on the track, the tires last FOREVER! I have 20+ days on my Michelin RS on the 400. I am sure I can get another 10 days out of the rear and probably the rest of the season on the front. On my 750 I was getting maybe 6 to 10 days out of a rear tire. Depending on the tracks of course.

hi Kelvin and welcome to Ninjette!

All fastest AFM 250 guys have used these Moto3 slicks for past 10+ years. Front tyre has pointy profile for fast tip-in. Using it on wider 2.75” rim just rounds out profile to be similar to more-rounded rear. Result is more stable turn-in that’s ever so slightly slower turn-in than narrower rim.

Overall, Moto3 slicks are fastest tyres you can get for 250. They’re lighter and much stickier than stock. Less weight gives you faster acceleration coming of corners. And there’s slight aerodynamic benefit too due to less tyre shoving air aside.

Thanks for tip! I’ll definitely check those out. You have favoured vendor?

Hello DannoXYZ and thank you for the warm welcome.

Thank you also for the great insight and confirmation on the moto3’s. I am surely going to purchase a set for this season, thanks to your kind and detailed feedback.

Thanks again!

Not for the 17s yet. I think there are only a handful of folks that have them and I think they are west coast vendors. But I am interested to see them in action.

Love this! I'm sure you will find that focussing on training and getting proper coaching will help tremendously with your racing goals. I did the same thing back in 2004-2005 when I first became a riding coach with CSS, I took some time off racing to work on my skills and to become trained up as a 3 star certified riding coach and when I went back to racing (my first time ever racing a 600cc (previously raced an SV650) I was soooo much better and faster than I had been before. Plus, my crashes were significantly reduced because I actually had a handle on what proper skill and technique looked like and how to handle certain situations.

Hope to see you at one of the CSS or code RACE events this year! Enjoy

If anyone is on the bubble between Pirelli TD and slicks there’s some good info in here.

Interesting. A tyre that's in between Supercorsa SP and Superbike slicks...
Not needing warmers is major bonus!

I personally can’t get used to the Superbike slick flattening out under braking. Feels like the front just dipped into a mud pit. Pretty much the only reason I’m switching to the TD’s this year.

Just thought I’d make a quick up. I found the limit of the TD front tire and didn’t crash! Those are some very forgive tires. They don’t have the outright grip of the SC’s but they give you a chance to right your wrong. They skip and chatter like hell before completely giving out when you trail brake too deep in a corner.
