Hello from Augusta, GA

Finally got my ninja on friday morning!!

It's my first bike and I'm still learning as I go but unfortunately I've only been able to ride it around the neighborhood for a little bit on friday and saturday due to rain and work but I can't wait for the weather to clear up and some free time so I can master this little best!!!

Thanks! I'm looking forward to getting her out on the roads and taking her through some twists and turns not too far from my house. Just need the roads to hurry up and dry!!!

Any suggestions on what I should start off doing? I've rode it around my apartment complex for a total of about 10 miles since friday and I have pretty much got down the friction point and starting off. Is that truly the hardest part? I havent really got past 3rd gear. So far I think the only things I noticed that I need to fix is that I stay in 1st a little too long so the RPMs get kinda high between 4-5k....I think I'm still kinda used to driving a car where you can stay in 1st a little bit longer. I know these bikes are made for high RPMs and all....maybe its just the Dan Moto exhaust thats making the RPMS sound alot higher My second problem is something that I'm still improving on from when I first started out but downshifting....I have released the clutch SUPER slow so it doesnt get the bog down effect when i shift into like 1st or 2nd and I've briefly opened the throttle a little bit to try to match the engine speed with the road speed so the engine doesn't slow my tire down as much. Is what I'm doing correct and I just need to practice a little more to have it down? I really want to try to get out on some not so busy toads in the next few days to get practice with that before I step up to some busier streets, but I want to master these few things I'm having a small ammount of trouble with before I do that. Any input you guys???

Welcome!
I'm going through the same growing pains so I definitely wouldn't be able to advise but I would REALLY recommend any of the MSF type courses. That way you'll get to practice all the emergency maneuvers in a safe place without the possibility of messing up your bike. Swerves and emergency downshift/stop without locking things up - never know when you might need it.

Did you get some awesome gear to go with that beautiful bike & helmet?

Yeah, I def planned on taking a MSF class as soon as one is available. I got a Speed and Strength Twist of Fate 2.0 jacket with the extra spine pad and some Speed and Strength gloves.

Nice choices! Any plans for the bottom half? I know you need proper boots for the course - and covering your butt would be good too!

I was looking at those gloves, I have teknik full length but the leather on the inside fingers/palms seems to be getting awfully thin and I've barely used them!

If you're going to try busy roads anytime soon the only thing that pops into my mind is SHOULDER CHECK!! All the time. The experienced riders here should be able to help you with your questions shortly.

I have some pretty good boots right now. Not motorcycle specific ones but they are pretty sturdy. For right now I'm just gonna have to deal with jeans for pants until I can afford some decent ones....not the best protection but alot better than swim trunks or basketball shorts haha

That's the truth!

My course instructors told people that for boots all they needed was ones that covered the ankle bone and to stay away from steel toes - less feeling and no chance of becoming toe-less. But again, construction grade boots are better than flip-flops.
