Stolen motorcycle

I feel so bad for one of my friends at work.. He's busted his butt over the last year or so working crazy amounts of overtime as well as doing everything he can to keep his wife happy so he could get another bike.. He went nearly 10 years between owning bikes, and finally found what he wanted when he spotted an absolutely beautiful custom painted hi-viz yellow 2006 CBR600 F4i with low miles on it.. He's a great friend, awesome dad, all that stuff.. He didn't even have the bike for 2 weeks and it was stolen in the middle of the night from in front of his house.. He's devastated, and I can't help but feel like crap too.. Thankfully, he had full coverage insurance, and I hope like hell that they give him at least what he paid for the bike, which was just under $4000..

Now, anyone that knows anything about New Jersey knows how horrible Camden is, and he lives about 20 minutes from there.. There's all kinds of bike locks out there, from chain systems to brake locks and all that stuff.. If someone wants to steal your ride bad enough, they'll find a way..

The reason I'm posting this is, if your bike was stolen, how far would go to track it down or whatever?? Would you leave it solely in the hands of the authorities, or would you be out scouting areas looking for your baby??

If it was me, I'd be out checking out every place I could think of, putting posts online, on Craigslist, wherever I could think of..

Ooo I could say that would suck, did he buy from a dealer or local seller? Can't say I would be to happy but there isn't to much can do but get what insurance covers. At least he will be able to get another.

There are two reasons bike are stolen; a joy ride, or parts. If it was a joy ride it's probably crashed. If it's for parts, it's already dismantled.

Sad story. A desirable moto just parked out in the open without extensive anti-theft measures is just a sitting duck for theives. Too bad.

Definitely a good idea to put the word out to friends and other motorcyclists about the stolen moto and check CL ads for the moto and its parts.

That realy sucks.

As much as i love my bike i would probably just leave it with the cops. Like CC said, it probably won't be in great shape when/if you get it back.

FTFY. That is why, given any sort of choice, my bike is never parked within sight of the street. Thieves can't steal what they don't know is there. Now, this will really only deter a thief that's just cruising by and decides to take advantage of his good fortune, but there's not anything you're really going to do if there's a thief who wants YOUR bike (rather than A bike) other than lock it up inside.

Considering the '06 is one of the better years for that bike and the fact that it had under 8,000 miles on it and was in pristine condition, I think he got a great deal.. Around here, a lesser year with a lot more miles and not cosmetically perfect would still run between $4k-6k..

I'd try my hand at detective work, but only because it might be fun. Not because I care that much.

advertised for, and actually selling for are vastly different things.

They generally sell between $3500 and $5000, depending on condition.. He paid $3850 for a low mileage, mint condition bike.. I'd say it was a good deal..

Anyway.. He had one of those rotor locks on it.. It doesn't take much to steal a motorcycle these days.. A simple pipe through both wheels and 4 moderately strong guys can make quick work of a motorcycle.. Sad, but true..

Did the disc lock have an audio alarm? The xena disc lock has a distinctive audio alarm that gets triggered by movement.

Sorry to hear that. But, like they said, it's either a pile of parts that are already sold and shipped somewhere or the joyrider crashed it and you don't want it back. Hope for a good settlement from the insurance co. and move on.

I'd be mad as h*** but I'd probably leave it in the hands of the cops.

i always hear people talk about how much bikes sell for... how do you know how much bikes are selling for? owners lie, sellers only advertise initial prices.... so aside from just a few specific instances, how do you know how much bikes are "generally selling for"? and not just what they're listing for

I'd say that shopping around for no less than two months ovia local ads, dealerships, etc. and having no less than 12 different bikes checked out personally would constitute a general idea of going price, and this was during the off-season when prices in this area are typically $500 lower than in-season.. We saw everything from junk to pristine condition bikes.. He bartered with several different sellers to get the best bang for his buck.. In the end, he paid a little more than a few of the bikes we had seen, but he also got a bike that was newer, had fewer miles, and had no issues whatsoever..

I suppose like nearly everything else, things are different from area to area in how bikes are valued and what actual end prices are..
