Mulholland Twisties on 50mph Electric Bicycle

Link to original page on YouTube.

A friend sent me a link to this. It's an impressive bike.

In the UK I'm pretty sure that / that bicycle would be classed as a scooter. Electric bicycles are only considered bicycles here if they're below a certain power rating. So you'd probably [technically] need tax, licensing and vehicle inspection for it.

If legally that is a bicycle in some/all of the states then that opens up a lot of cool opportunities for you guys... like legal lane splitting in non-cali states! You could commute to work through heavy city traffic at speed!

I'm really confused about what to think in terms of protection. It's common place to see road riders in lycra travelling at high speed on roads like that. They usually just have a pair of gloves and a helmet for protection. Does it make sense to wear more protection on this kind of bike? After all, you don't need so much freedom of movement because the bike isn't purely human powered like a traditional road bicycle. I'm pretty sure road cyclists would wear more protection if it wasn't so prohibitive... chafing!

When I visit the Alps to go mountain biking I wear a full face, knee/shin pads and gloves. Occasionally I end up on a downhill road at the end of a trail and I'll easily get over 50mph. Ordinarily I'd never travel that quick on a motorcycle without full gear head to toe.

That's a fairly interesting video Akima, in the UK I believe electric bikes all need to be assisted, so that they only work to contribute a certain percentage of the power at the wheel requiring you to pedal also, if they were manufactured before a certain date they can be fully electric, plus they are limited to something like half a HP which is about the same as a person. I am sure this would be classed as a moped.

It's neet to see more electric vehicles, I am in the process of chatting to www.evc.gg about getting my Mercedes A-Class converted to electric. Less than a penny a mile to run, yes please!

If it can go over 20 it does need to be registered as a moped. Mine has a 48 volt and can do 30. I just kept it under 20 around cops. If you are pedaling hard cops will think you're just a bicycle.

it depends on the state, but here in MA, you cannot ride a motorized bicycle over 25 mph legally.

My ebike

I stopped riding it when I got my Ninja. My dog was not happy about that.

It's funny having a speed restriction, most places in europe limit power output as it's easy enforce, easier to measure and directly impacts speed anyway.

It is stupid to not do it by power. 20 is easy to go with a regular bike.

That's what I was thinking! With a pace line and some half-competant cyclists, you can average 20-22 mph for a couple hours. Does that classify us as scooters?

I would never wear full leathers on a bicycle. Heatstroke.
