OEM pregen oil filter

So I got the stuff together to do an oil change on my 2001 pregen. Was going to follow the write up on the wiki. After checking around for oil filters it wasn’t much more expensive to just order the OEM Kawasaki one (16099-003)

I ordered from partszilla. My order finally came in today 12 days later. Not only am I not impressed with the shipping speed but the filter has no rubber o-rings with it? Am I missing something here? It came in a Kawasaki box but it’s only the filter in a bag.

This should have come with rubber o-rings right?

Alright so some more searching found a thread from 2013 where someone said the same thing and reused old o rings and someone said that was fine as long as they are in good shape.

Suppose I’ll do the same and just make sure I get one that comes with them next time.

Could one make the argument that Kawasaki agrees with this by not supplying them or are they just being cheap. Hah

If you got a retail packaged Kawasaki oil filter then it likely would have included one but the O-ring has its own part number (671B2590) when ordering from the OEM parts catalog. Kawasaki does sell retail oil, plug, and filter change kits for many of their bikes but they usually list the supported engine models instead of the specific bikes. I haven't seen one for any of the 250 engines.

I ordered 4-pak filters from .... Amazon? It came with O-rings and crush-washer.

Suppose it's up to vendor what they include. But yeah, I always keep old set of O-rings in case new filter doesn't come with one.

I wonder if partszilla would send one if I sent them an email.

Unless they just want to make you happy, probably not, …since you ordered OEM and they sell both part numbers. It’s a bit like computer parts where the retail version of a drive might include an installation guide, mounting screws, and a data cable while the OEM part is just in a brown box with an ESD bag. Might be worth a shot though.

Noted. Another reason to buy stuff in person from local places if prices are remotely similar.

I’m confused by the retail and OEM verbiage here. It came in a green kawa box with part number on it etc how is that different than retail?

Edit edit- 9$ for that o ring seperate? Lol what

Yeah, using the OEM parts channel for some consumables can get expensive. At least their partners (dealers) get a discount.

For reference, here’s an example of Kawasaki’s retail oil change kit:

Oil, filter, crush washer, O-ring, and even spark plugs all in a retail box intended for store shelves.

Meanwhile, I bought this OEM petcock back in 2014 which was packed during MY2012 production in Thailand (later models have a fuel pump instead):

Instead of bespoke part-specific packages for OEM parts, Kawasaki uses a label printer with various, often branded, boxes for most boxed OEM parts. They use the same label for their OEM Kawasaki-branded parts bags you might get with a nut or bolt. Sometimes they’ll slap the same label on their supplier’s brown box.

The boxes from Kawasaki Thailand changed in recent years. The same OEM petcock is now available in this box:

Maybe it’s the same box they use for the oil filter now?

While it may look like a retail product, the branding on their OEM part packages merely serves to distinguish a genuine “Kawasaki” part from a generic one. Generic parts are perfectly legal but Kawi can sue if the generic manufacturer or a reseller fakes the OEM packaging.
