Transitions shield.... FTW!!!

I'm a subscriber to the 7-year-from-manufacture or 5-year-from-first-use helmet life guideline, and this spring my trusty Schuberth street helmet came due for replacement. Just scored a Shoei RF-1200 from Riders Discount for a killer price. Also got a Transitions shield to go with it, because as a commuter who often works until after dark, I know that carrying two shields sucks.

Got to use this lid for the first time this morning. Wow... the Transitions shield ROCKS!!!! I was unsure about how dark it would actually get, and about the slight purplish hue. It gets easily as dark as the Shoei dark smoke, and your eyes adjust to the color with no problem. Things look just a tiny bit warmer than they would otherwise be, but that's about it.

Absolutely worth the money. If you can get a helmet that will take one, go for it. AFAIK the only brands that do right now are Bell and Shoei.

Seconded, I had a Bell helmet with a transition visor and can't imagine anything better for commuting. Before that it was always a compromise or a shield switch when I got off work. My shifts were from 4pm to midnight/2am so bright and sunny on the way in and pitch black on the way home.

I can also attest that both brands crash very well so long as the fit is correct for your head. They're both well worth the investment.

Shoei RF-1200 with the changing shield- that's what my husband uses, too. He loves it, too.

This is good to know. I hate having to carry a smoke pinlock insert.

Nice score! Glad you got a deal.

Do the inserts distort/magnify the field of vision? There were some transition visors at the dealership I worked at, and every one of them made me feel like I was wearing someone else's glasses, and when put on for any length of time, gave me a headache. How does yours hold up in this regard?

The deal is very good, but I don't dare to buy without trying it.
Did you buy it without trying it?

I saw some helmets indicate the head shape as intermediate oval, and other shapes. Have you checked that? Is that for real, or just another marketing BS?

Some helmets come in different internal shapes, yes. It can help it fit better. If your head is rounder than the helmet it's not going to fit or be comfortable.

My track helmet is a Shoei X-12 so I know I have a Shoei-shaped head.

Every year I go to the International Motorcycle Show in NY and try on various helmets specifically so I'll know what fits me and what doesn't. Bell helmets just don't work for me. Same with Arai. I'm on the fence about AGV. Shoei fits perfectly, so I'm a Shoei guy.

But I do the trial every year anyway, because new models might be a bit different.

Re the head shape thing... yeah it's real but there is of course variability. Also, you don't really know what shape your head is for sure until you try something on.

Helmet fit is very personal and if your helmet fits as it should (snug... see if you can find the Arai fit video) then the small details matter a lot. The best way is to try one on.

Fit is hands-down THE most important factor in choosing a helmet. Every time I see a "Which helmet is best?" thread I facepalm for this reason. The perfect helmet for me is useless for you if it doesn't fit right. Reputable brand, correct fit, end of discussion. That's all you need to worry about.

Buying online is a low-risk thing. All the major retailers have good return policies and all it'll cost you for a mistake is the return shipping... which is likely less that the cost of gas to go hunt down the perfect helmet locally.

Having said that, grab every opportunity you can to try on different helmets.

I got one and have mixed feelings. I don't see it completely replacing either my clear or dark smoke shields. It's not quite as dark as the tint for when it's really sunny out. And if it's a cloudy day, it'll still have a bit of tint to it (it does go clear at night). That said, it's great to have if you're going out late or doing a road trip and don't want to bother with lugging around an extra shield.

Interesting. I purchased both a dark smoke and the Transitions lens with the helmet. When the package arrived I immediately took both shields outside into bright sunlight to see what would happen. My immediate impression was that the Transitions shield got as dark, or even darker, than the dark smoke.

However, I do know that the effect is temperature-dependent. This was a bright, sunny spring day, temps in the upper 50s or so IIRC.

I'll have to try it again and shoot video with a standardized object behind each shield (e.g. a note card) for objective comparison.

Late to the thread.

Just wanted to add that the X-14 and RF-1200 can swap their face shields interchangeably.

The transitions shield is pretty good. Doesn’t seem to get as dark as dark smoke for me.

I believe it depends on temperature. Cooler temps mean a darker shield. When I first pulled it out and went outside it was probably in the low to mid 60s, maybe a bit cooler.

Two brands offer them: Bell and Shoei. On the Shoeis, it's the RF1200 and the X-Fourteen. As noted above, same shield fits both.

I don't know about Bell.

Transitions shield FTW

Has anyone tried any brand of anti-fog, auto tinting helmet shield inserts. They seem too good to be true for 20. I have read a little on them and Ive read that they are slightly blurry. Oh yeah, I have the Shoei RF-1000. Thanks
