The rationale for carrying a gun is often stated as "because I cannot carry a cop."

Au contrere. Why not carry both?

If i'm lucky my birthday present this year from my other half will be a trip to the gun range. I've never fires a gun buy i've always loved them and wanted to.

If i like it i may go for a permit.

Then i may need to review this thread.

sounds like a plan, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE start out with a .22LR pistol. If you have never fired a weapon before the last thing you want to do is touch off a .357 mag round and drop the weapon.

My mom can shoot the .22 no problem, start with that, and work up to a 9mm or .40 cal.

I would hope the range wouldn't put anything too powerful in my hands the first time! I'll keep the .22 in mind when we go.

Shoot 38 rounds from your 357
Less kick and cheaper rounds.

1% ers. Violence is inevitable with these thugs, especially when they disagree about territory. It's no different than the mafia murders that took place years ago in various cities as different "famiies" fought over territory.

Before buying, be sure the handgun fits your hand well. If you can't properly grip it, accuracy, and self confidence, will suffer. Most women make excellent students when taught by trained professionals. They usually don't have any bad habits to unlearn and are attentive to instructions.

The lady in this series of pictures has a gun that fits her well. She is able to get her strong hand (right for right handers, etc.) fingers around the grip just the correct amount. http://simplyaboutguns.com/wp-conten...rip-stages.jpg

Good luck, and be sure to wear hearing protection on the range.

Ive heard that before.

I would only ever buy a gun i felt secure holding and firing.

No different than picking a motorcycle to ride.

The .38, while much better than a .357, can still be an intimidating round to a complete novice. Many .357 revolvers have large grips, and unless Teri has an exceptionally large hand, may find that it doesn't fit well. Starting off with a .22 is a good idea.

Walter's 22 and Ruger's 22 are nice and easy to shoot. Besides, it's much much much cheaper to shoot 22s compared to the other rounds.

Just to be clear

I think it is a very bad idea to carry a gun everywhere you go.

I have no interest in taking your weapon away from you but I am unafraid to go about my life unarmed.

I do enjoy going to a range. They are fun toys.

I did not get a concealed carry permit until a year ago, don't carry everywhere I go, and don't worry about being unarmed when I do. But history has shown that there are folks that will do innocents harm without reason. I would rather carry a sidearm and not need it, than need it and not have it. If by chance you or your loved ones wind up in a situation where a crazy individual is intent on inflicting harm, I hope someone with the ability to stop them is there and does so. Should that happen, would it possibly change your mind?

I do enjoy going to a range. They are fun toys.
I would disagree that a handgun is a toy.

I think it is a bad idea to do so. JMHO

Yup, the police will tell you that they can't be everywhere at once, and your personal safety is ultimately your responsibility. That's why injuring another person or taking their life is justified if it is in self defense.

The course I took to get my permit was put on by the sheriff's office. The instructor, a deputy with many years of experience, stated that he hoped someone carrying would be able to take out a crazy that was injuring or killing others if law enforcement wasn't on the scene.

Some people would say that it's a very bad idea to ride a motorcycle. I leaned to ignore them along time ago. Grandmothers and dogooders who think they know better how I should live my life.

I really was looking for the experience of those who do ride and carry to give me pointers and suggestions on doing so.

and just for the record, a firearm is not a toy.

When I learned to shoot they had me shoot a Mosin with the stickiest, heaviest trigger ever. It was to make everything seem way easier after that point, and starting with a bigger cartridge was supposed to scare me into respecting the gun, I think.

Scaring someone into respecting the gun usually leads to flinching!

Were these professional instructors or someone else?

Did you know that all concealed handgun permit/license holders: 1. Have never been convicted of a felony, crime of violence, or domestic abuse. 2. Are not addicted to or use illegal drugs. 3. Cannot be under indictment or a fugitive from justice. 4. Have passed both state and federal background checks. 5. Are required in most states to take periodic training in order to continue to carry.

It cost me over $160 to get my permit, and will cost that much or more to renew it in five years.

Many states limit where a permit holder may carry their firearm.

When was the last time you heard of a handgun permit holder making an unjustified shooting?

How many criminals adhere to these restrictions?

All I'd shot prior to being issued a military surplus .38 special S&W revolver, was a friend's .22 semi-automatic pistol. In my youthful confidence, I felt I had "mastered" the .22 in less than a box of shells. With the 18 rounds that were issued with the gun (we had to buy our own ammo in those days), I was confident the .38 would be no problem.

Once I figured out how to load it, I took a sheet of paper, made a small black bullseye on it, and set it up on a levee bank. I backed off about 20 feet or so and squeezed off the first round. The results were not as expected! There was a double whammy of the sound of the round going off which immediately bounced off the dirt wall in front of me. This was in the days before hearing protection. My ears were ringing!

On the second and subsequent rounds, I was squinting my eyes, and scrunching my body in anticipation of the deafening sound I knew was coming. After emptying the gun, I went to inspect the damage to the target. There was none. Not a single bullet had hit paper. Using unassailable logic, I decided more practice was needed and went out and bought a box of 50 rounds. I set up a narrow piece of roofing tin that was about six feet long against a tree - no more shooting at the sound enhancing levee! I eventually got to the point that I could get four of six rounds in the tin. I figured if I had to shoot at someone, I'd either hit them or scare them into running. Either outcome would have been ok with me.

What you people do not understand is, if you are proficient and clear headed in a fight I am more than happy to be anywhere with you and your gun but I will not.

I do not understand gun nuts how feel they need to force a gun in my hand.

Funny fact: 93% of drivers think they are better than average drivers.
