do i void the warranty if i do my own maintenance?

I was just reading through the warranty guide and it sounds like I have to have everything done at the dealer or I could void the warranty?

I believe your warranty does get void from what I've heard and read. If there was ever to be a problem, the dealer/Kawasaki can just say that you haven't had the bike serviced by an Authorized Kawa dealer at X kms. You need the dealer stamp.

But I still self maintain my bike, did my 1000km by myself, and going to do the 6000km bike by myself very soon also. Save a heap load of money, and I know whats going in my bike.

I don't know if it voids the warranty, but keep all your receipts of parts, and keep a maintenance log just in case. (edit... oops blue raven beat me to it.)

I took my bike to the dealer for the $600mi service, and i'm still kicking myself for it. They charged me $217 for a glorified oil change. I started doing it myself after that. It cost me less than $20 and maybe 20min of my time.

They cannot legally void your warrenty for not having a Kawasaki dealership perform the work. See below.

+1

mine too, only he said, "miles."

Regardless.... even if you void your warranty, you already saved money..... almost as much as if you never purchased the extended warenty in the first place..... I learned the hard way.

oh i didnt even know there was an extended warranty, so i guess i dont have that lol...

i dont mind if they do that 1000km service, since there's some stuff with that, that i dont know how to do... all i really wanted to do was early oil changes while it's being broken in... most of the stuff done on my bike i'm sure will be done at the shop cause i'm not that handy, i just want to be sure that if i do an oil change and then the next day my breaks go, that they'll still fix it!

I don't care if I void my warranty. Coming from the computer world, I always treated warranties as "if you don't do things my way, you get no help. Even if you do things my way, you're SOL" worthless pieces of crap.

I do keep a record of what I do for potential resale, should I choose to sell it later on for whatever reason.

That is a pretty accurate picture of reality, at least in my experience.

I think the Manufacturer's warranty that comes with a new bike is 12 mo. I purchased an additional 4 years (5 total I think) for $400. I didn't know I would regret it, but there are much costlier mistakes in the world.... no biggie, live and learn. One super positive thing about the extended warranty though is it WILL transfer ownership, so that is a major selling point for many people who buy used.

well the manuf. warranty is only 12 months of which we maybe ride 6 - 8 months so actually the warranty is pretty much worthless unless you get a lemon right out of the dealership. they throw the unlimited miles on there as a joke because most people only put a couple of thousand miles a year on their bike.

That's what lemon laws are for. When you have the government behind your back, things are a tad bit different.

(Couple thousand miles? Are people just letting bikes sit in the garage, excepting the winter, of course?)

Actually right now our canadian dollar ($0.99 USD) is basically at par with the US finally now if they could get rid of customs so us canadians can buy stuff from the US without paying duties and get free shipping like you guys

I paid around $400 for the extended 3 year Good Times Proctection Plan but i bought it before the price went up in April '09. I got it because it was my first bike and it also had roadside assistance, though it might be good for a newbie like me.

Even if i send thingsacross the border to family members as gifts I have Canadian customs hold it and try to get money out of them. Its silly. I handmade something once and they wanted a receipt and proof of purchase. I told them how is that possible and they could tax for the cost of supplies if they wanted and they said no. I asked them well what do you think its worth. I get a phone call back 20 minutes later saying $500 USD. I never knew a college students artwork was worth so much. Customs needs to die.

Yes, generally speaking, it probably is good for most newbies. Those of us that participate on these forums and like to get our hands dirty are PROBABLY not the majority.
