n00b gear questions...will this provide enough protection?

Hey everyone. I'm new to the forum, and to riding. I'm turning 40 this year, and I just bought my first bike, an EX250 from 2003. I'll be taking the MSF course soon, and I'd like to start buying some protective gear, which I'll use every time I ride. I'm approaching this new chapter with all necessary caution. I'm very excited, but also sufficiently terrified.

For now, I'm planning to ride around town, and on some back roads, with no plans for any highway riding until I feel very comfortable with the bike and my skill level. I won't be exceeding the speed limit, or at least I don't plan on it.

I know that there are a million threads on this topic, so sorry to add another, but I'm looking at a specific jacket/pant combo and I wanted to see what you guys thought. As for my preferred style, which is of course secondary, I'm looking for something that's somewhere between a cruiser and a sportbike as far as looks go. Would these provide adequate protection?

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com...T.ac=SLIsearch

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com...T.ac=SLIsearch

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com...T.ac=SLIsearch

I understand that I may need to replace the back protection with something more substantial. Are these generally a one-size-fits-all, or do I need to find something specifically made for this jacket?

As an alternative, how about this one?

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com...T.ac=SLIsearch

I don't have a tremendous amount of money to spend on gear, but I want to make sure that anything I buy is adequate for the task. If these aren't up to snuff, maybe I can look for something used, but I'd prefer new. I'm also looking for helmet ideas (sub-$150 if all all possible), and of course I'll buy some boots that cover the ankles.

Any advice you can offer would be really appreciated!

Nothing wrong with your gear selections so far. And back protector insert areas are NOT one size fits all. Knox makes some really long and some really short for example. I am not sure on your plan for helmet/boots but don't forget those.

Gratz, good luck and enjoy!

Too expensive for my taste.

Let's start from here:

all good gear. agv is great quality. you might consider buying cheap with your first set of gear just because you make mistakes when you are new... would rather make mistakes with cheap stuff than expensive stuff... the difference in quality mostly results in how many crashes you can withstand ... agv stuff is probably good for 3+... where as something like a bilt jacket... maybe 1 crash. maybe. so find something in that 1 to 2 crash range of quality, then when you have more experience with the subtleties of the gear and how you use it, you'll be able to find a piece of gear that is higher quality that will really suit you well.... for example, you probably -- in reality -- wont wear the leather pants very often. but a pair of kevlar jeans or overpants? you would be much more apt to use them, plus they are cheaper, and will provide adequate protection.

Thanks! I'm looking for opinions as far as helmets and boots go. I'd really like to keep both under $150, but I also want to make sure that anything I buy meets all safety standards. Any ideas? It seems like the Shoei 1100 is a popular choice here, but I just don't know that I'll be able to afford that for a while.

If you want to upgrade the back insert in your jacket then I'd recommend the A*'s Bio Armor. You can easily trim it to fit any jacket also.

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com...Protector.aspx

If you want to step up the protection a little more the Icon Field Armor Stryker vest is sweet.

Thanks!!

So, what's the general feeling about textile + mesh? I get hot very easily, and our summers here are generally in the mid to high 90's. Enough protection?

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com...le-Jacket.aspx

I was also looking at something like this, all textile:

Somewhere there is a thread here with a bunch of links to places to buy online. Find that and search through the "closeout" and promotional sales. You can get great new gear that way much cheaper.

I got my Scorpion for $110 shipped. Boots are just down right expensive. Deals are there jut gotta find em.

Next option is to buy lightly used, then have it cleaned by a pro. Going that route could save you $100's and you could get top of the line stuff.

Very good advise, Alex !!!

Mesh has less protecting capability than textile and textile less than leather.

http://www.motorcyclegear.com/

Again, I would stop shopping around (the easiest part if you have the money) and would start understanding what you need.

Consider your weather, the time of the day, the heaviness of traffic, the length of your average ride,............ and the money and the service work that Pepe sure needs.

After doing that homework, find a mortar shop where you can try the gear on your body and get familiar with the sizes and materials.

Almost as bad as riding under-geared, is riding distracted by the discomfort of feeling hot/wet/cold and squeezed up by boots and helmet.

Also, take a trip to a shop that sells gear and try some on. You just might NOT be the size you think you are. Different brands fit differently.

Awesome, thanks guys. I'm planning a trip to a bike shop this weekend, as I'll need a place to go for service, and I would like to try some of this stuff on in person. I'm all about spending less for gear if I can, I just want to make sure I'm covered...literally.

As for my rides, I imagine they'll be on the shorter side at first, until I get comfortable. I'll plan on sunny days only, but of course I'll have to deal with the unexpected rainstorm every now and then. I plan to ride slooooowly to start, but at the same time, I'm sure that my risk of a fall is much higher when I'm learning, so I'm a bit torn as far as how much protection I'd need. This is a great start though, and I really appreciate the advice.

Another important form of protection to consider:

http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showt...ight=insurance

Your lines of defense will be:

1) Your education, attention and skills.
2) The good condition of your machine.
3) Your gear.
4) Your insurance.

Hope you will never have the need of using #3 and #4 !!!

More good considerations. As soon as I finish the MSF course and register the bike, I'll take of insurance before the first ride. As for its condition, it was purchased from a bike mechanic and runs very well, though I'm not mechanically inclined at all, so I'll take it in for regular service. Is there a set schedule for that (once every 6 months, once a year, etc)? Obviously, with a 10-year old bike, it'll need some TLC.

I always check revzilla... Great videos and informative, then I cross reference in the Internet search bar looking at price differences... Welcome to the party! Enjoy the ride... Safety

I like HJC helmets, cost is good for the price!

On topic: OP if you are tight on money check out Motorcyclegear.com's "Customers Closet". Great deals there. I picked up a pair of Icon Motorhead boots in my size for $50 shipped.

Just run through it every couple days to see if they have anything in your price range/size.

Good buy !!!

A little more than I wanted to spend right now, but they're the best-reviewed jeans I've found so far...
