Bike wouldn't start this morning...

I went to take my 250 out today since I haven't ridden it as much since I got my 650. I turn the bike on with choke hit the starter and the engine wouldn't catch. Tried giving it a little gas and nothing. I decided if the engine wouldn't catch, I'd force it to. Pushed it down the drive way and it started for a few seconds and went dead. Tried again and this time it caught and started up. I let it warm up for a bit, turned it off and tried to start it again and it started fine.

So, any idea why my bike wouldn't start until I push started it? The last time I rode it was about 1-2 weeks ago.

I don't know. But the same thing happened to my friends pregen a while back. He probably didn't ride it for like two weeks like you and it wouldn't catch. So we had to try push starting it multiple times. Finally started up and it was fine after that. Hasn't done it since. So I am curious too. Anybody know the answer to this?

My answer: Bikes have a mind of their own sometimes!

Far fetched, but my only guess would be that the fuel level got low in the float bowls (evaporation), and since the petcock is vacuum operated, the bowls weren't getting enough fuel from the petcock during cranking. Once running, constant vacuum was provided, and the bowls filled back up.

When you start run a bike do you leave it in gear (which one) or neutral?
