Buying a new bike that is 2013 model year
I'm considering buying a '13 ZX-6R that is new but is leftover stock.
Anything I should be concerned about/look out for if I pull the trigger? Thanks in advance. |

I would check the condition of the tires, battery, hoses and air filter.
I would replace brake fluid and coolant. I would lubricate everything that needs oil or grease, just in case. Just as a general guide: http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Service_Schedule http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/How_lon...o_replace_them

Dan, my GSX-R was one of those... a two-year-old leftover that had been sitting in stock.
My $0.02 is that if the thing's been sitting in a warehouse for two years and not used as a demo, lubricants, coolant and brake fluid won't have degraded and the normal lubrication points will still be lubed. It's a brand-new bike. Assuming the battery's okay, it can be treated as such. Not owning a trailer at the time, I rode it home... and did the calsci break-in along the way. I had picked up oil and a filter ahead of time so I could do that first oil change as soon as I arrived. http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/NewBike.html The break-in procedure is at the bottom of the page. The top is a handy new-bike checklist. The heads-up I'd give you is to make sure that everything that's supposed to be there, actually is there. Sales/parts guys are not above "borrowing" stuff off of in-stock bikes to make a customer happy. That GSX-R was missing its owner's manual and a bar-end.

Check the current book value for a 2013 model. That's about what you should pay.
As an example we purchased a used 2009 Ninja 500R with 2400 mi on it for $2000 that was purchased in 2011 as a new leftover for $3500 OTD. The MSRP in 2009 was $5499. Book value when we bought it was about $3000 - but nobody gets that for them. We also purchased a brand new 2016 Ford Fusion, when the 2017s were out, for what the book value was for the same car used with 1000 mi on it. |

Get the warranty that is offered from kawi. It is worth the $$ and you can extended it over and over again. My 13 was bought in 12 and my warranty is good until 18... Then I will extend it another 3 years.

I see an Extended Warranty as a BIG win for the dealership. Maybe you need it - probably you won't. It's usually $1000 or more, and I can't tell you how many people buy the 3 year extended warranty then sell the bike in less than a year - for whatever unforeseen reason. I've never bought one on anything. If I think the specific item would need it - I wouldn't buy it. Most of the time if something is going to crap out it's going to do it quickly, so your original factory warranty would cover it. Save your money. |

However, you should get a very deep discount. MSRP for my bike in 2011 was $11,999, plus prep, destination, tax and tags. I paid $9500 out the door including prep and destination, but not including tax and tags. I don't know what "book value" was when I bought it. I do know that I got a hell of a deal. And 60 months of free Suzuki financing on top. Didn't pay a dime in interest. Pro tip: Feb/March is the very best time to score a deal on a leftover. Dealers are highly motivated.

I know, but that is a very good place to start. Otherwise the dealer will throw "MSRP" at you all day - and knock-off a few bucks so you think you got a deal.
I bought a new car (2016 model, late 2016 but 2017s were on the lot) a few months ago for the book value of a used one. It should be similar for a new/leftover cycle, especially one that's going on 4 years old. Even if it hasn't been started or ridden, things (tires namely, but also other rubber parts and fluids) still degrade in over 3 years of sitting. |

My warranty is about $100 a year and I don't need to worry about the engine or anything else that could be a defect. For me it makes since. When I sell it, it will come with a warranty.

Those are pretty darn bulletproof, and can survive extended track use without any mods, so decent maintenance and you should be good for a long time on the street. Another thing you see is when the owner goes to sell a bike with an Extended Warranty that they paid $1000 for, they think they can get most of it back by raising their asking price $1000 - which never works. Even at $100 a year I don't think it would pay off. If you are concerned about engine longevity run a high-end Ester-based synthetic oil like Motul or Redline for about $50 per change. |

One of the engines that blew was because the pistion broke. But you do what's best for you and I do what is best for me.
