Saints and Soldiers
The Way Back
Heartbreak Ridge
Lions for Lambs
Enemy at the Gates

saints and soldiers and enemy at the gates are easily two of the best war movies I have EVER seen. The Way Back takes place post/during WWII and it's not movie about WAR but rather war PRISONERS. Can't go wrong with any of the movies I recommended and they are not gore filled so I would say are appropriate for a whole family, maybe not small children. Private Ryan is about 1000% gorier than any of the movies I listed.

i love movies that are portrayed in a more realistic manner. So my faves are Black Hawk Down, Jarheads, and Saving Private Ryan. Tears of the sun is a darn good Movie too. We Were Soldiers isn't the best out there but not going to lie... those guys were F^%$ing hard core in real life, and it's def worht watching at least once.

These are some of my Favorites:

Full Metal Jacket ( A must for Marines like me!)
Platoon
Saving Private Ryan
Flags of Our Fathers/Letters to Iwo Jima (great if you love an awesome storyline)
Apocalypse Now (another Vietnam movie)
The Hurt Locker (touches real close to home for me)
The Pacific ( this should have been a two part feature film!)
The Patriot (to break up the monotony of Vietnam/WWII movies)
The Red Baron
Hamburger Hill

I don't know about regular people, but The Hurt Locker really gets to me personally (maybe it's the demons I battle from my time in Iraq). It's very accurately depicted.

Almost forgot Enemy at the Gates ( I love that movie too !) Thanks Ed!

Is The Way Back the one with James Franco? That one was good too.

Edit Nevermind I was thinking about The Great Raid. A little IMDB never hurts in the morning.

Full Metal Jacket, Blackhawk Down, and Band of Brothers are my favorites. Just don't make any plans once you start watching Band of Brothers. You'll end up watching it all day long. It really sucks you in.

Yes, like a said it's not a movie ABOUT war, but movie that takes place DURING a war, about war prisoners/refugees.

The Way Back is a good film although there is some controversy whether those events really took place as told in the book The Long Walk by Sławomir Rawicz; the book that inspired the film. It's still a recommended watch though.

If we're going to add in movies that took place within the context of war but perhaps not qualify as an action war movie itself then I'm going to mention Schindler's List.

True, it can be depressing but war is full of dualities and while there is lost and sadness in the film, there is also heroism, salvation and freedom.

Not sure if a Cold War movie has been mentioned yet but The Hunt for Red October is a good one.
