Wind noise gives me a headache and is exhausting! I wear custome made silicone earplugs and they're amazing I recommend them highly

Wind noise is starting to get to me, either a new helmet is in order or a pair of good plugs. I'm looking at the kind where you just slip them in and you don't have to wait for foam to expand

I'm still on the fence on mine, though I think I have found that its due to me not inserting it correctly. I also have a noisy helmet that isn't helping with the noise.

Going to test them out with my quieter helmet this weekend.

Here is a cheaper option that I have worn for close to a year now. I wash them off every other ride, or when they've been sitting for a week, and the cord has really come in handy. These are now stuffed in my tank bag should I lose my more expensive ones. Readily available at Ace.

My problem with the foam ones are it feels like i can never get them in fully, or they fall out, or the noise sounds amplified. The flanged ones to me feel better and fit better. Unfortunately, I'm paying for them too.

I wear the orange foam ones from home depot. I push them.in there pretty good. They then expand but hold inside and definitely dampen the sounds so it's very comfy. I push them until they are pretty well compressed

The foam ones cut too much sound for me. These are just about perfect for me.

wind noise

Over the years wind noise can add up and very quietly without you realizing it you begin to have partial hearing loss. I have an Arai custom fitted helmet that reduces the wind noise dramatically because of the fit. I also have the foamie ear plugs and custom fit ones. I seldom go anywhere without ear plugs especially if I'm doing distance.

The foamies can be washed often and should be. When I get into the shower I bring the foamies and wash them with shampoo squeeze and dry thoroughly. Good to go next day. They last a long time.

If you go to any of the larger rallys you can be fitted for custom ear plugs. Note because they are molded they take longer getting used to and if your style of helmet compresses certain parts of your ears then they will be uncomfortable. Because they are $50-75 if you are prone to losing things foamies might be a better purchase.

Ear Plugs Newly Discovered Benefits for Seniors

Been using them since i got a new exhaust and even the little cheapo foam plugs make a big difference for me.
MIne are flesh colored so, leaving them in after helmet is off is also a great way to meet female audiologists, lady ENT specialists and even oncologist-a's as they, from a distance, resemble tumors.

earplugs .....

I wear them every time I ride, street or track. Once your hearing is gone, it is not coming back in this lifetime.

Been wearing earplugs more often at work lately,.. it can get freakin' loud in a machine shop, and it made me think of this thread. I've been wearing them when I ride for the last three years and now i don't like taking anything more than a short ride around town without them.

I know the idea of wearing earplugs when riding a motorcycle is foreign to a lot of people so I figured this thread could use a bump. I consider it part of ATGATT since it protects your hearing.

(Apologies if this has already been covered a million times -- I stopped following the discussion in this thread a while back and haven't reread everything).

I've heard a lot of people say that the foam earplugs don't stay in their ears, or don't seem to properly attenuate sound. It turns out those issues are also commonly associated with improper earplug use (Though definitely they can still be issues for people using earplugs correctly! Everyone's ears are different, and some earplugs just don't work with some ear shapes).

The natural way to insert an earplug is to just take it and push it into your ear. It turns out that the obvious method is actually not that great in this case, and leads to the earplugs forming a poor seal in the ear, or just never really getting deep enough into the ear canal, leading to them popping out. Also, in my own experience, pushing the earplugs straight in can cause earwax to get pushed deep into the ear, eventually leading to temporary but significant ear pain and hearing reduction.

Earplugs are so commonly misused that OSHA has developed a correction formula to estimate the actual hearing protection afforded by improperly-worn earplugs: NRR_effective = (NRR-7)/2.

So if you have a pair of foam earplugs rated at 32dB, if you wear them improperly you end up only getting ~12.5dB of actual noise reduction.

This video illustrates the best way to insert foam earplugs. There's also a handy graphic here for the bandwidth-challenged. Rather than pushing the earplug straight into the ear, it must first be rolled into a tight cylinder, and then the top of the ear should be pulled straight up, to straighten out the ear canal. After that you can just slip the earplug into the ear canal (it should go in very easily) and hold it for a moment until it expands enough to not move around.

In addition to blocking out noise, earplugs also promote a sense of peace, harmony, and well-being.

At least, they do for the guy in the video, anyway.

When my gf says "I have so much to tell you about my day", I tell her to give me a sec to pee first....so I won't have to interrupt her with a bathroom break in the middle of her story.

I just pop these bad boys in and just smile and nod for the next 90 minutes.

Just be sure that you can still hear stuff around you, people honking, tires screeching, the whoopies from the wambulance and emergency vehicles.

I like to jam out sometimes when I ride but sometimes it's too loud that I can't hear my surroundings.

when i go on long rides, i have manipulated ear plugs into my head phones so i have music and hearing protection. the ear plugs with the strings seem to work best. pull the string and put the ear plug around the head phone.

my HJC CL15 I go back and forth too. even with a full exhaust at WOT it doesn't seem unbearable (previously I was a mechanic so exposure to loud noise is nothing new).

waiting on my icon airmada to arrive. saw they came out with a first responder version which inspired me to get it shipped to my car painter and have him do an ER nurse version. then off to get the bluetooth speakers installed, first time with those too very excited

When I was riding my 2007 ninja 250 to work on the highway super early in the morning ~75mph or so I was mostly okay without ear plugs. The air was nice and clean and my helmet seemed fine. I probably should have worn plugs then anyways.

Once I changed bikes over to a vstrom 650 I got myself some of those "vibes" earplugs and now wear those whenever I'm going to be on clear highway. For traffic during commuting I typically don't bother as I'm not rarely breaking 50mph.

wear the same silicone ones that I use at the range for when I am riding.. My helmet is a little louder than i like but I noticed a few years ago that my ears tended to ring for a while after riding and after a hearing test about 6 years ago, i had some permanent hearing loss... so earplugs went in, and honestly, i wished i had done it years ago and might have been able to avoid some of the "huhs" or "can you repeat that"'s that happen from time to time...

I use the cheapo reuseable ones from the hardware store. I just find them more economical than the disposables. Remember to keep em clean, though.
