Looks like spring!
I rode from Stockton to Oakdale and back today (had to buy some CA glue, no hobby shops here). I passed orchards in bloom and stopped for a photo. Only a 75 mile ride. Really nice out!

In the R/C flying hobby we use large amounts of CA in various formulations; thin, thick, foam-safe, ect. I like 2 oz size bottles. These glues are not sold at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Walmart, Home Depot or normal craft stores.
If you have a local hobby shop you are truly blessed.

Yes, I used that very trick on broken fairing tabs on a Yamaha 1200 Venture years ago. Best if done in 2 or 3 layers.

What kind of materials will this work on? All plastics? Does the heat generated ever cause a problem?

The baking soda (or micro balloons, ect) acts as a filler. It has the side effect of causing the glue to set almost instantly. It gets hot enough to smoke, but only for an instant. (Beware the fumes). I have never had the heat melt the work. I have repaired styrene plastics this way, but I am not sure about ABS. Flexible plastics can sometimes be repaired using epoxy. Fiberglass cloth can be added for strength. The faster the cure time, the more flexible the epoxy; 5 minute epoxy being the most pliable after curing. Fillers can be added to epoxies, as well, for example sawdust. Fillers can also make the epoxy set up faster, so beware of mixing large batches. Interesting fact: JB Weld is epoxy that uses various metal particles as a filler.
