Email issues - rDNS

Hi all -

I've been getting more notifications recently that people haven't been able to sign up (by not receiving their registration emails), but it's strange in that it looks like most of them work fine. But some don't, and the people are adamant that the emails aren't sitting in a spam bucket somewhere. Running some tests with the aol.com mailserver troubleshooting page, it looks like there are/were issues with this ninjette.org server. I had thought that rDNS (reverse-DNS) was set up correctly, but apparently not. I believe it is fixed now, so in a couple hours those mailservers that were blocking us due to bad rDNS, should start allowing more (all) mail through to their users.

I'm hoping it means more successful new registrations. I'm thinking that it might mean that some folks who have been signed up here for awhile, might notice new emails coming from ninjette.org that they hadn't seen before. (thread notifications, PM's, etc.). Please let me know if you do happen to see any different behavior over the next few days...

- Alex

OK - really having fun with email policies. AOL is still giving me fits, so I added some SPF content into the domain records, which should help. More info here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sender_Policy_Framework

Will monitor the noise over the next few days, see what happens. For ninjette.org users that do use aol.com, are you ever getting any email from this site?

Confirmed that it is working as expected this morning; AOL is no longer rejecting mail connections. Hope this good behavior translates to some of the other large providers that make decisions based on rDNS and SPF.

Brain fart - forget that I send out ninjette.org email from my ISP's mailserver, as well as from gmail from time to time. Added both of those servers to the SPF record, and hopefully that's the last change for these for awhile.

Received an email today from a new user (who is on cox.net), who suddenly got 170+ emails from ninjette.org successfully making it to her inbox for the first time, since this change was made yesterday.

I got confirmation this afternoon that the microsoft sites (hotmail.com, outlook.com, and a few more) have elevated the IP rep of this site, which should allow more of this site's email to make it successful into user inboxes for those services.

Added DKIM to the server this evening, which will help just a bit more in correctly identifying email from the site.

OK - time to sleep. Just added a DMARC record to the domain, which hopefully is the last step in this whole email adventure for a long while.

So with all of this email fun, it has been good to get some validation that it has had an effect. I signed up for Microsoft's SNDS (link here), which is a free service that lets mailers see how their mail is being treated by Microsoft (at hotmail.com, outlook.com, and a few others). Once I signed up, I saw that our mail here was classified as red, 45 days in a row. Sadly, they only keep 45 days of history, so that's all of them. Here's the scale they use:

After the improvements I made this week on rDNS, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and setting up FBL's at Microsoft, Yahoo, AOL, and perhaps some more I've forgotten; here's what I saw when I logged in this morning:

AOL just officially upgraded us today, so our AOL users should be seeing all mail from here going forward.

I was trawling through the mail logs this weekend to see if there remained any outliers that were still blocking our mail, and found two of note. Verizon online, and ATT.net still are not playing nice, and rejecting a large portion of mail being sent from this server. I have good news on the Verizon front; after several emails they have re-evaluated the situation, and email should start to be delivered normally as soon as today. No word yet from ATT, but will check the logs later in the week to see if the problem remains.

ATT has dropped the block, so members using their email service should start seeing their notifications again as of today.

Seem to have backslid a bit here over the past few weeks. Sometime around mid-June, the hotmail/Microsoft notifications flipped back to yellow, then red. Running the email diagnostic, still shows that the SPF, rDNS, DKIM, and DMARC settings are all still working, so I'm a bit at a loss. Will look through the email logs this week to try and find a pattern.

Bump for an old thread, but a new problem. Mail from this site to yahoo addresses just started bouncing today. The error message in the bounce says that the IP address is listed in the spamhaus blocklist, yet when I check the IP on that site, it says that neither the IP nor the domain are on the list.

Not sure if it's a temporary glitch or a more widespread problem. If all mail from this IP can't deliver to hotmail or yahoo, I've got to move the site at some point in the near future.

If you change it anytime before june, please keep it a .org. The only reason this website gets past my schools filters is because its a .org, and Mr.Fetenger is lazy, so all .orgs, .govs, etc that pop up on the highlited list of things to check get passed, while .com's etc get researched.

No, the domain name isn't the issue, it's the particular IP address / server that was at least temporarily flagged. There are many domains that all point back to this same site (relevant thread). If you want to freak out Mr. Fetenger, just start using www.ninjetteporn.com to get here.

To graduate plus you need 42 credits and all the required classes, I have 62 (I think) credits and all the required classes. My current schedule is sr tech, gym, news, art, study hall. So I don't do anything all day. Also I have straight A's so...

No thanks, I would rather not get one of my favorite pass times blocked. Also, on that thread you linked it had "ninjaadmin" starting a thread and you replying. Aren't you the original admin/owner?

Yes. Early on I used a separate admin acct, but there turned out to be not much point to it. I guess I could merge the accounts.

For new users it would likely make more sense if all the admin post were from your main account, however, its not important, and likely more of a waste of your time then anything.

I set up a small test server at another provider. Will play with it a bit, and see how it behaves with a backup version of the site. If all is well, will work to move it over on some upcoming weekend.
