New Year's Day Two Mountain Ride

A friend had the right idea, inviting us to join him as he hit two of the nearby fun mountain routes on New Year's Day. Weather was just about perfect, and the road conditions were pretty good as well. A little sand in some places, but overall as clean as one could hope for on January 1st. It was 70 degrees at the top of Mt. Hamilton! Later in the day it was just a bit cooler on Mt. Diablo, but not by much.

A whole bunch of bicyclists were out on the Mt. Hamilton loop as well.

All pics in full res available in this gallery.

Cool! All I got to do was destroy my stairs and attempt to rebuild it without falling off.

On the way down the backside of the mountain, we came upon a tow truck stopped in a strange place. We went back to look, and he was dragging a turbo porsche from the ravine. On the front side of Mt. Hamilton, we had passed a couple dozen porsches, it looked like a club ride of some sort. One of them evidently didn't make it. The driver of the car behind saw a deer run right in front of the accident car, and he went right down the hill. Driver was fine, and the car looks, at least from these angles, better than I ever would have expected. I can't believe it didn't roll. The steepness of the mountain there is hard to judge in photos, but check out the guy on the line crawling back up with effort.

Another tow truck arrived to help out by running another line, and we didn't wait around for it to be dragged all the way back up to the road. Here are a few quick videos from the morning, shot from the 3rd bike (the pics below should be clickable into smugmug videos). There's a great view of the Wing being thrown around a bit, but I'm just out of view on the BMW for much of them.
