I Dropped my feeler gauge down into the Engine!!!!!!

Hey all. This is my first post.

I jsut got the little ninja for screaming up and down the Santa Cruz mountains without getting speeding tickets.

Anyway, brought it home ot do a valve adjustment. While doing the last valve Idropped my feler guage down the cam chain area. It went all the way down. I couldn't get with a magnet from the top and i cant get it with the magnet through oil strainer hole.

Is there anything else I can do? Do I have to drop the motor and split the case? Can I get the the bottom of the timing chain anyother way?

Any other Ideas?

Pull the clutch cover off, should be sitting in there.

Thanks guys....that link is exactly what I did. We even have the same feeler guages.

Off to take the clutch cover off.

To split the case, do I have to take the motor out or can I just unbolt the bottom engine mounting bolt?

You would have to pull the motor to split the case.

Long as you didnt drop the feeler gauge on the cam tensioner side, you should find it behind the clutch cover.

hmmm....now the clutch cover is stuck on.

It's sort of loose but wont come off....

got the cover off.....looked every where and every which way i could with magnets.

Still no feeler guage =(

Thats not good..........

Did it fall between the cam gears, or down alongside the chain?

I though it fell along the chain towards the front of the motor because I saw it stuck in the chain closest to the front. When it went for the magnet, thats when it fell down.

I was thinking it got stuck somewhere along the chain guide but it doesnt look like it so far.

where else could it be?

Do you have a small mirror, like an inspection mirror? So you can kinda see down in there. If it would have fell down the middle, its a staight shot down. Sounds like it might have got caught up in a chain guide.

Im really hoping its somewhere in the chain guide because thats where it was stuck in the first place.

I really dont want to pull the motor.....or more importantly, I dont wnat to pull the motor only to see that it was somwehre up top.

Im thinking of taking off the cams to ge the chain super loose.....

Think the oil drain back into the case is behind the clutch basket. Has to be in the chain area. No way to look down in there(mirror)??????

Guys, I think Im really ****ed on this one.

I cant find it all. Im going to take the cams off so that I can move the timing chain around. If its not there it has to be in the oil pan right?
I really don;t want to split the case cuz this bike only has 700 miles on it.

If I knew id have to take out the motor, I wouldve bought a dead ninja for $300 =(

I feel so dumb. Ive assmembled at least 30 VW and porsche motors from scratch with out a hitch. Now I do something as stupid as this.

Im kinda worried cuz I work SUPER full time so I don;t have too much time to pull and disassemble engines....

sad ninja owner....

If I can find it in the timing chain area Im really thinking of buying a used engine to drop in until I have stress free time to dissasemble this one and find that stupid guage.

Im not too confident on setting the timing on overhead cams....does anyone have detailed instructipons on how to instal a timing chain?
If youre in San Francisco, youre more than welcome to come over and do it. Ill feed you and get you super drunk .

Sucks to hear!

Iam hungry and thirsty, but too far away.... If you built other motors, shouldnt be a problem for you. Dont have a manual on the older model. Think its just setting to 2TDC with the mark, the cam gears are marked(lined up with the flat part on the head/vc), remove the cam tensioner, then the cams. You could mark the chain at all three gears to be safe. The bolt on the cam tensioner comes off and you back out the actuator < you have to hold it in place with a pin or plate depending on what it is for install.

Think theres a DIY for the new model, since the cams have to come out for valve adjust. It might help?

When it went for the magnet, thats when it fell down. I was thinking it got stuck somewhere along the chain guide but it doesnt look like it so far. =( where else could it be?
