Two on one

V twins are slowly but surely growing on me. To the point that I believe some non-Harley flavor of v twin will be my next bike. In my limited mind they are to motorcycles what V8's are to motor cars.

This two on one talk I have been having with myself is inspirational. Perhaps I will take it to other areas of my life.

Check out Aprilias. I've owned two, and they are an absolute blast to ride. Still kicking myself for letting them go.

You can't go wrong with a ducati... I'd say Suzuki TL1000R, but don't know if you'd go in for such an old bike...

Ducati's rock, no doubt. A little concerned about maintenance costs, however.

This worry is much less than it used to be. They are both more mainstream now (more dealership support and less cost to get parts), and have really decent service intervals (much much better than ours -- I think the new Ducs have 15k service intervals!). So yes, still a bit on the 'exotic' side of costs, but not anything like 15 years ago.

Also, wasn't the RC51 a v-twin? GORGEOUS bike.

Unfortunately for me, the Ducati's I like are the mid-90's Supersports. Bad news, 6000 mi valve adjustment required. Good news, they are two valve engines, so are simpler, so I could learn how to do my own maintenance!

Oooh, superhawk. I was thinking of getting the little brother of that; the NT400. Also a V twin. The stats on it seem to suggest it performs quite similarly to a 2fiddy ninjette.

honestly, sv is probably the most cost sensitive and reasonable vtwin to step up to. never really known someone to say anything really negative about them. personally I really want a RC51 but just cannot justify it

Get a test ride on a KTM 950 SM or Super Duke.

I know, right?

I hate it when other people say that. Yet, hypocritically, love it and think it's hilarious when I do it.

I worked on Aprilia rsv1000s as a dealer mechanic. They are wounderful bikes. Beautiful inside and out. Not expensive. Just top quality and you have to pay for that. I rode an RC 51. I fell in love with the power and the delivery(it was an 04 with a power comander) but could not bend my knees enough to ride for more than 1/2 hour.
I owned a VFR800. V4 is the best motorcycle engine hands down. Problem is they put them in 650 lb bikes that do everything well and have no soul.
For my money and the lack of it I would get a SV. Parts are all over E bay and the aftermarket. They are light and great to ride.

+1 on the Superhawk. While the SV is more economical, the Superchicken has more character. They do fine in stock trim:

Or after I hit the deer with it...

Link to original page on YouTube.

Rebuilt as a streetfighter:

Or, completely reborn in race trim:

However, I must say that thus far, the Ninjette is every bit as fun as the Superhawk was. There is definitely something about riding a slow bike fast...
