bolt size for gas tank

I need to replace the bolts that secure the gas tank on my 2005 Ninja (the ones accessible by removing the seat). One of them snapped and I'm not sure the other is actually the right size. A lot of bolts on this bike were stripped by the previous owner (including the drain plug- ended up drilling it out and tapping it to the next size up and that at least is resolved now) and I've been replacing them as I go. I don't necessarily trust the bolt I have to be the proper size.

What is the actual correct size for these bolts (length, diameter, thread count)? I have a repair manual for the bike but it doesn't have those measurements.

Cool

Welcome, Ryan !!!

It is great that you have asked, because that particular bolt, when the wrong length is used, perforates the tank, which is a common occurrence.

I would find that section in an online parts diagram and locate the exact bolts you need.

When you find the part number it should list the dia, length, and pitch.

I did actually perforate my tank after mixing up my fairing screws. Fixed it with some epoxy putty and I learned my lesson on that one- but I'm talking about the bolts under the seat, not the fairing screws.

I looked at the diagram on kawasaki parts house - and it has the bolt in the diagram - but I can't find anything with that part number.

According to this diagram:
http://www.ronayers.com/oemparts/a/k.../fuel-tank-4-4

Part 130 is a M6x0.75 / Length from neck to tip = 10 mm

Part 180 is a M6x0.75 / Length from neck to tip = 25 mm

6 mm is the exterior diameter of the bolt
0.75 mm is the pitch for fine threads of M6
Fine threads are mostly used in applications with vibrations, like a motorcycle is.

You are welcome

I just added some more info to my previous post.

Home Depot and Pep Boys have drawers with the type of bolts displayed.
In this low-stress case, the grade of the steel does not matter.

Are you referring to #180?

If so, here's the part # and size 180AA0625 BOLT-UPSET-WS,6X25
