COBDR, definitely not on a ninja.

Quote:
Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route
COBDR routeThe Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route is a scenic ride across the state of Colorado, beginning in Four Corners and finishing at the Wyoming Border. The route has been created specifically for dual-sport and adventure motorcyclists who are interested in exploring Colorado’s majestic high-mountain ranges and historic mining country.

This 675-mile south-to-north route utilizes many remote and high-elevation dirt roads and leads riders through a number of iconic locations including Telluride, San Juan Mountains, Continental Divide, Collegiate Range, Northern Rocky Mountains and historic Leadville, along the Colorado River.

The COBDR is a multi-day off-road adventure that sends dual-sport motorcycle riders through the most dramatic and rugged landscapes in Colorado. The route begins at the Four Corners National Monument in southern Colorado and ends 675 miles away at the Colorado-Wyoming border. This route utilizes a variety of unpaved roads with rocks, mud, sand and water crossings to make it fun and challenging. It is intended for intermediate to advanced riders, and can be ridden on most treet legal dual-sport and adventure motorcycles.
In about 4 weeks, my KLR heads to CO on the trailer, along with 4 others, all BMW GSAs.

I'm preparing the bike now, with pretty much new everything, from bars, to bodywork, tank and tires.

2000 KLR 650, punched out to 685, high compression, Elka shock, Ricor Intiminators, skid plate, Michelin T63 knobs. probend fat bars, Oury grips, LED aux lights, Garmin Zumo, Wolfman luggage, IMS 6.6 gallon tank, Rotopax 1.75 gallon water. Camp axe and saw mounted on the bike as well.

We will be camping most nights, so I will be packing the survival gear since my friends are pretty lax on that front.

I'm the only one with any real off road experience, on the most suitable bike for the trip. We will be doing 13,000 foot passes, which is where I'm worried. I have issues working at 9000 feet. I'm getting in shape, and losing weight, I hope it helps!

Sounds serious, and fun. Bicycling really helps things like offroad motorcycle gymnastics, hanging off and dragging knees on tracks, etc.. Take lots of photos and video!

I do some time on the elliptical, then I lift, then I kill it on the elliptical again. I'll most likely also be taking the altitude sickness pills, so I can hopefully get used to it before I even get there.

I'm usually ok in the gnarly stuff at 5000 feet, but I have not been in this good of shape in a long time, I'm hoping the sickness stays away this time.

We will see, I'm taking over 2 gallons of water to stay hydrated at altiude.

So, preparing this bike for a trip like this has been a huge expense. The last time I really went through anything major was 2009 before my trip to James Bay.

I have about 3 weeks before we load up the bikes, I'm pretty sure that I will be gone for work at least one of them.

I have a very large tote full of parts that I need to install. This should be great fun!

Today, the bike was actually farther apart than it was for any of the previous work. Lights are wired and mounted, variable controller for heated gear is installed. SUB and lighter socket are wired. GPS mount is on and wired. This may be the most expensive KLR cockpit ever.

New rear tire and brakes are good. Front tire is mounted to New wheel with upgraded rotor. Just need to mount it.

I found that a 2015 tail light directly replaces the 1986 tail light that I modified onto my bike.

Holy crap, I get to ride on that mountain!

I think the bike is ready. Of course now that I have made it an even more awesome KLR, my son wants it back! I have it to him for his birthday on the condition I could use it for this trip. I mean, it's still in my name, I insure it and register it....Lol

Big front rotor added today, LED lights finished, and reassembled!

I think I'm pretty much done. Adding an easily adjustable pilot screw to the carb. Riding it to make sure the kinks are out. And then we load them up and I fly next Thursday afternoon!

I'm loaded up, dropping the bike off tomorrow at my friends house, loading in the truck, and they take off Thursday afternoon! I'll see my bike again Friday in Colorado. Lots of food made and packed, I'm trying to stick to my diet while on the road.

Just saw this. When are you planning to cross through Gypsum. I could ride up and grab a coffee with you, if'n you want. Also, get you whatever you need if'n the first part of the ride broke anything.

Sorry we didn't have much time in gypsum. We had lunch at the Mexican restaurant, grabbed some beers and headed our top a great campsite about 10 miles outside of town.

Today we rode 5 different passes. Wow, it was frightening at times. I was at 12,960 feet here, and terrified. Lol

It's been a bit of everything on this trip, camping has been awesome, riding tons of great roads, teaching my friends how to ride mud, sand, rocks and how to find lines on the dirt.

Judging by that last picture I'd say someone found a line in the dirt and stopped for a closer look.

It was great! We are having a professional video guy work on our footage, and I am working on a trip report, it will probbably be delayed because I am getting ready for a week in the Appalachians now.

I would say this pushed my control of the bike to the limits, 60+ pounds of gear on the back of a 400 pound bike, riding down a road made of loose scree. I won't lie, I went down once, and was a bit scared a few times.
