Bike sat for two years.....

Super mad at myself for doing this twice....

Race bike sat for a year with minimal use. I'd start it here and there, but it progressively starting running worse.

I cleaned the carbs, during which time I noticed the diaphragms were a bit deformed and essentially would not go back into the carbs. Fortunately I had a spare set on my parts bike.

Bike ran great afterwards, but I still didn't race it. I ran it here and there, but for the last year it has been in off site storage.

I tore into it last night and this morning. New plugs and fuel, but wouldn't start. Pulled the carbs and cleaned them.

Diaphragms are deformed again. Can't get them to seat in the carbs properly.

Is there any "saving" of them? They appear to cost $125ish each, which is crazy.

Thanks for the help, and bring on the "bad bike owner" comments.

WTF? With the flower petal like appearance...would indicate they were not seated correctly....and/or subjected to chemical exposure? creating such an abnormal pattern? Did you use some sort of starting fluid or carb cleaner?

You could try washing them in warm soapy water (NO harsh chemicals), followed by bathing them in a product called Rubber Renue...see what happens. But NO GUARANTEES.

Next cheapest option? Probably...look for used slides or salvage carbs on the board here? Or ebay?

Other options...
if interested I've got a fully refurbed, like new carbset in stock for '08-'12 models (you didn't specify what year you've got in your post)

I've got aftermarket rubbers in stock, they require intense surgery to swap over....but can do if needed.

PM me if I can be of further service.

Good luck with it.

And another thought....you say it's a race bike, what fuel are you running?

No chemicals. But the old fuel was two years old and had Stabil in it.

After massaging them a bit and letting them sit - i was able to get them back to "normal" form and get them to seat in the carbs again. Didn't open the other side because I don't want to tempt fate.

I took out the bowls and cleaned the jets, etc with carb cleaner.

Any other thoughts before I reassemble and try to start?

Going to hit a bicycle ride and try to wrap this up tonight.

Think I'm making progress, but I cannot get the airbox back on the carbs to save my life. I don't have a ton of experience with it - until I moved to "WERA Land" I used pod filters as they were legal with CMRA.

Is there some trick to getting this thing back on?

To get airbox back on:

1. Push carbs onto boots on head. Tighten all 4 hose-clamps

2. Loosen both hose-clamps on airbox to maximim, 1-thread from falling off

3. Push/wiggle airbox onto carbs so they are fully seated

4. Tighten both hose-clamps

5. Connect crankcase vent

6. Route carb vent down middle back down to shock

7. Re-install cables.
