Valve shims

Just checked my '15 300 @ 12k miles. Intakes were good 7,8,8,8. Exhausts tight 8,9,9,9. Checked shims with Venier and got rough numbers so I'll barrow Mike for better numbers. Checking with magnifying glass showed an 8 & 3 on three shims and nothing on forth. I'm 2nd owner so perhaps it was clearanced before with non oem shims. Checking prices I found oem as high as $13+each and Moose brand at $1.95(misprint?) from Dennis Kirk. Are these exhaust valves welded 2 piece units that lose head hardness during welding like some Hondas had? The face and seat must lose metal for them to tighten up right? Thanks,GJ

2 and 8 what? I believe the clearances in the manual are:

exhaust 0.22-0.29 mm (0.009"-0.011")
intake 0.15-0.24 mm (0.006"-0.010")

or thereabouts.

The right value in the manual for 88 thru 07
Valve Clearance:
Intake 0.08 - 0.13mm (0.003-0.005 inches)
Exhaust 0.11 - 0.16mm (0.004-0.006 inches)

The right value in the manual for 08 thru Present
Valve Clearance:
Intake 0.15 - 0.24 mm (0.005 - 0.009 in.)
Exhaust 0.22 - 0.29 mm (0.009 - 0.011 in.)
Same as your
The reason for the diff is the cam has a slight taper so valve bucket can rotate

This is a Ninja 300. The clearances for the 250s are not the same.

Your intake clearance for the '08 to '12 Ninja 250 should be 0.005" to 0.009" (not 0.019)

Well, intake should be 0.006" to 0.009". It looks like my secondary source was wrong.

I just look on eBay for filters and buy them. I'm surprised you couldn't find what you need. Usually they're like 10 for $10 for 1/4" or 3/16" fuel line.

Like these... I searched for "inline fuel filter 3/16": https://www.ebay.com/itm/26534470231...3ABFBM3KvN1M5f

Here are some for 1/4" line even cheaper: https://www.ebay.com/itm/33419406893...3ABFBM0pfr1M5f

If they're a little loose, put cable ties or clamps on them. I'm using 1/4" Tygon fuel line so they fit properly.

I see so you didn't get a 5/16 or 8mm fuel filter
In general, this is a bad idea being slow down the flow rate which would work fine if was just one carb but not pair carbs I keep look soon or later I fine what I'm look for even I have to get a Fram G4167 that used on the old Subaru from 80's
Any way thanks

Trust me, there will be no shortage of flow on a 250 if you use 1/4" fuel line. I've had this fuel line and filter on my 250 for five years now, and have done top speed runs and many miles. It flows much better than the stock fuel line with the tiny filter at the carb inlet.

It comes down to flow numbers. Here's what I measured with 3/16" filter I got from motocross shoppe:

- 80% WOT on track consumes 7 ltr/hr
- that works out to approximately 120cc/min
- measured flow-rate at 6" below tank = 210cc/min

Unless you can find somewhere to ride at 140% WOT for hours on end; flow is more than sufficient.

DannoXYZ just wondering did your factor in the paper filter media density restriction for let say at lease 5or10 Micron in order to capture dirt and other particle from getting into float bowl in a gravity feed system.
Also, I hope to be driving this bike some 1500-mile one way to Idaho I hope this summer to see Grandkid and Daughter maybe even drop down into Nevada to see my mother and cousin "Yes I know I'm nuts " but what can do the driving my truck with avg mpg 12 is not going cut it and cost arm and leg in fuel so it drive or take a bus.

Those tests were done WITH 3/16" filter in-line. I change them once per year during winter rebuilds. Never had problem with them clogging up over time. They could probably go 5-years without any issues, I just do them while rebuilding entire bike over winter. Got bag-of-10 for peanuts and might as well use them.

For non-track riding with less than 5% time spent at WOT, even clogged filter would flow more than enough.

2.58??

Borrowed son's micrometer and found all 4 shims measured the same. 2.58mm or .1011". After looking at all the online pix of shims I saw no sizes that didn't end in 5 or 0. The center of the numbered side was against the valve stem so any center number is erased. I'll be doing emery/whetstone thinning.

Hey John when you order your hotcam shim kit 7.48mm they only come with in .05mm increments so you need get them with in the general valve lash clearance spec it doesn't need be 100% perfect.

there's spreadsheet around where you can entre your clearances & shim thicknesses per cylinder. Then play mix & match with moving shims around. This reduces the number of shims that needs replacing. Usually just 1 or 2 max.

Job done, runs fine but yellow engine light is on. Does the computer need running time to reset itself?

Yellow could be the ABS Indicator Light or Check Engine Light

Old dog new tricks or "Once again you have learned Weedhopper"

Found info on the code reader I didn't know existed. Ah so! #64 air switch valve unplugged. Let's see-brain fade, senor moment, evil gremlins? My shop also tends to make tools and parts disappear only to reappear minutes or years later. Learning is what life is about and doesn't end until life does.
