Help with windscreen bolt
I cannot get the bottom right bolt into the rubber grommet - I can see it, but the bolt just will not engage the grommet. They are slightly mis-aligned - the hole to the screen, the hole in the fairing, and the rubber grommet (nut).
I have been at this for an hour - why does every DIY turn into 5x the time length and 10x the frustration needed? I am begining to hate all DIY.... |

Try to stick your hand up along the front fork and push the rubber grommet. Its not very much space in there, i lost both the rubber grommets for the bottom right and left bolt. I had to take the front fairing off and super-glue new nuts in to place.

That only managed to cut my wrist up bad...
Is there a longer screw I can buy? Give details about longer screw - don't just say - "Yes". |

Is it a replacement rubber well nut? Some need to be squeezed to engage.

if you re-drilled the hole in the windscreen, would that make them line up? that's what i had to do with my undertail...after getting behind the bike, and trying to push with my shoulder, using all of my bodyweight to make the holes line up, i ended up just drilling a new hole

The alignment is not that bad - it can see the grommet and it is just a (mm) or 2 to one side, but so was the other side and it engaged the rubber grommet and tightened with no problems.
I might just go to the fastener store and get a slightly longer bolt - after an hour and a half in a 100+ garage, I'm calling it quits for now. Why does every simple task turns into an ordeal from hell... |

I'll guess that the rubber rotted out and broke and now the part of the grommet with the nut in it is separated form the part that goes through the hole. This happened on almost all of my fairing well-nuts. Here is a link to replacement well-nuts, although you'd have to wait for shipping.

I've had the exact same problem trying to put on a ZeroGravity touring windshield. I think I'm going to take it to the shop and let them put it on. I figure it can't cost all that much.

My grommet is looks fine as far as I can tell - the darn bolt just seems a bit to short to cause the proper amount of pressure to engage the grommet.

Try and take loose the one hex bolt on the inside of the screen on each side behind the mirror mount . Pull it out the plastic piece a couple inches and you can reach the back of the bolt wellnut from under the wind screen
And make sure you are putting the longer bolts at the bottom and not the top . Two different sizes on the wind screen |

I have tried every way to get me hand behind the grommet - but no matter which direction I go at it, I cannot seem to locate the rubber grommet with my free hand.

I could only reach with a couple fingers jammed under the screen . Take loose the two plastic covers behind the mirrors above the gauges and make sure you have yhe longer bolts at the bottom

My bolts are the same length - I guess I used them in the wrong places when I removed my fairings...

That's the problem. Bottom bolts ( close to headlight ) are a lttle longer.

Right on the money - tried a different bolt from the fairings and sure enough, the b*stard went on...
Good call Steve Should have tried this before I cut up my hand and wrist. The difference is length was barely noticeable with the eye. |

I managed to get it back on, though. It involved taking the fairings off (I was adding a 12v socket to the bike at the time, so no biggie) and held the grommet with a pair of needle nose pliers while aligning it by sight. Took several tries, but I manged to snag it with the screw. Definitely try to do it with plenty of light. |

Same thing happened to me. You have to stick your hand up there and feel around for the rubber grommet to hold it. I could only manage to hold it by pushing the tip of my finger on it because it was so hard to reach.

I've got the same issue on a few of mine... I think it's about time to start replacing them with something that won't rot out, but I use the "wedge your arm up in there" method and it works... takes some patience though
what would be the ideal thing to replace them with? |

If you have a cycle gear near you, they sell a windscreen bolt kit (with different color bolts to match). It comes with 8 grommets, washers and bolts for $15.99 and they do fit your lower fairings as well. Retail from a dealer is about $4 each.
www.bikebolts.com sells a complete kit (fairings and windscreen) for about $33. |
