Pics of my 170/60/17 tire
Well after some help here and over at kawiforums I finally got my big tire on my ninja. This mod was pretty difficult but it was worth it. I don't recommend doing anything like this if you plan on racing the ninja or trying to really carve up the corners.....it won't work well..........

why would you want to do that if it decreases the performance and handling? just so you can look cool with a big tire?
Not trying to flame you just curious as to what the motivation was? |

hahaha yes the tire is crooked the axle isn't aligned yet (haven't had time) the reason behind this was I just picked up a 2003 yamaha v-max and that will now be my daily driver. I'm also saving up for my new zx-10r so I figured I would just do everything imaginable to the ninja to see what it would come out like.....yea.......

if I wanted to look cool I have the means to go out and buy a bigger motorcycle....i'm not some 18 year old kid who couldn't afford anything else or who's mommy wouldn't let him get a gsx 600 for his first bike....cool isn't really a big deal for me...I got the ninja because I thought it would be a neat little bike to have......plus it was rather inexpensive and I taught my fiance how to ride on it when the bike was stock....over time I just figured I would start adding small things along the way....clip ons...rearsets....then it grew and grew into quite some project bike....it helped me get to know my motorcycle THAT much more.I'm just trying to find unique things that no one has done to the bike (in this case very very few)......I got tired of my ninja looking like EVERY other black one on the road....with a fender eliminator....aftermarket exhaust and a tank pad....so i started adding things like the koso gauge, my new rear tire, new triple tree, things that I haven't seen TOO many people do.

exactly......actually i figured i would just leave it off and not bolt the axle on the swing arm either......just cross my fingers that it didn't come off while I was riding....who cares if the axle isn't lined up....hahaha

i think thats a great idea...the fact that you're expeiramenting with your bike. it lets you get to know how the bike works and what your capabilities are. afterall, you're not using this bike as means of tranportation. wish i could do cool things to my bike, i just won't cuz i don't want to mess it up...but if i had the money to buy a bike to mess with, i would.

It's nice to see someone who not only "get's it" but admits it. I've read so many posts on the net from people that put a wide rear tire on and claim it makes the bike perform better. I'm not only talking about 250R's and this board but rather (mostly young and inexperienced) motorcyclists in general.

yes I absolutely knew going into this what it would do to the motorcycle....really the only gain from doing this (besides cosmetic) is that where I live there are ALOT (and I mean ALOT) of cracks in the highway....with the old 130 rear if I got caught in one of those cracks for awhile it felt like I was on a rail.....not so much now.

I really hate the bad roads here in michigan, seems like im swerving more often then riding in a straight, worry-free, line! a 160 might help with cracks in the road, if you just happen to get in them, but i wonder if a 180/190 rear would be the same feeling, or better than a 160 rear? IMHO a 160 rear would help handling out in one way... if your rear tire happens to ride over a good sized rock/pebble, while leaning into/through a Curve, having more contact patch on the road vs 130, the 160 you'd think would be LESS likely to skid out from under you than a 130 rear in the same situation. |

yea the 110 is pretty narrow. I upgraded to a 120 which is stock on most bigger bikes. I finally got the ninja all put back together. I'll post pics tomorrow hopefully.

Holy ****-balls Batman--that's a HUGE tire!
Not only does it look freakin cool- but it probably improves suspension and handeling as well. Just saying........ |

What rim did you use? Was it a full rear end swap or just a new rim? That is a really tall 17" especially compared to the stocker next to it. Is the rear lifted? Is that adding some of the extra height?
Thanks Bob |

I used a 2006 650r rim. did a reweld on the swingarm and some mods to a 650r rear wheel setup to get it to work. It wasn't too bad and can be done if you know what your doing or have a trusty welder on hand. The height of the bike is pretty high now though. I'm about 6'1 and I can barely get the ball of my foot down on the ground (on each side) so it really feels like i'm on a bigger bike. (more comfort). some of this height came from the tire and about 2.5 inches came from the hyabusa "lowering" links I put on about a year ago. |

Cool. There was another write up on a rear wheel swap on another 250r site using the same rear rim. I actually have an FZR600 rim here and may end up trying to swap it on. It's a 160 on an 18" rim but it has the same rear axle diameter so it may go on easy. Time and motovation willing it may happen

Actually it would be easier if it has the same diameter axle (which is 17 mm on the 250r). For the axle though you would need to know how long it is as well as diameter. The 650r rim uses a 20mm axle so I had custom spacers made from the shop to reduce the hole sizes on the 650r wheel spacers to 17mm. The axle fits nice and snug.....

Well for a pic and ride update guys its gonna be long so bare with me.
first some pics...taken after I got her put back together....NOT WASHED YET!! http://i749.photobucket.com/albums/x...s_picture3.jpg Well my first ride went well(ish). The tire is really gonna have to take some getting used to. Its not bad but very different. I'm going to feel alot more comfortable when it is FINISHED.....yes it isn't finished and here is why......... As I took off I immediately noticed a severe lack in acceleration...... I rode around for a minute figuring it was just in my head....it wasn't. Then I hit the rear brake.....didn't feel it grab at all...SOMETHING IS WRONG.....After about 5 more minutes I drove her home and had a look at the tire. All seemed fine til I got to the brake disc....I am using the 650r brake disc (obviously because I am using a 650r wheel assembly).....I am also using the 250r brake caliper...(as I was told to do by someone who had previously completed this mod) well the disc and the brake bads were touching.....actually more like romantically embracing one another so I knew that this was the reason why I had a lack of accel as well as no rear brake action....what it could be??? 1. First guess.....when I first removed the rear brake caliper I possibly got an air bubble in the brake line (some how) and the brake pads are potentially not all the way open. I will check this tomorrow. 2. Second guess.....the 250r brake disc is potentially thinner than the 650r brake disc....this would mean that the caliper is fit for the thinner 250r brake disc....solution for this would be to "face off" the 650r brake disc about 1mm to get it to fit a little thinner in the caliper. Once I find out the ninja will be ready to roll! I have a new 41/15 sprocket combo coming so after that goes on she is done. |

actually looking at the picture above......notice the rear brake disc.....look at the outer most part of it.....see how nice and shiny this is compared to the rest of the disc? This was my first clue as to what was gong on. Hopefully this will be dealt with soon.

The caliper most likly can not open for the 650r rotor. So your brakes are locking up maybe?

i'm not sure...I just checked and the 650r disc and 250r disc and they SEEM identical (thickness) with the exception of the mounting points. I will pull out a measuring tape tomorrow and check it is too dark out now.

My guess is that there is air bubbles in the rear line.
As long as the brake pads are not pushed up against the caliper housing you should be OK. You just need to reset the pistons so that they adjust to the offset. I'd suggest a rear bleed before you go any further. Bob |
