Any HAM operators out there?
Just curious how many resident nerds we have on the forums. If you are a HAM operator or just getting interested in HAM, feel free to post here.

Cool, good to here, no callsign for me yet. I just scan on my receiver and listening in to get the hang of things before I go to test. Still got some of your old equipment? Also, If we get enough posts on here, I will post my RF paradise rap :-)

KG4EFO here! Haven't been active since I got my ticket in '99, though. My 2m handheld is dead somewhere, never bought a new one. But, now that you've brought it up, I can see that I'll be spending the weekend thinking about getting back into it.
73!

Lol, it is really become a lost art, but the technology is amazing. The licensing no longer requires knowing morse code, and you can find some really cheap, old military receivers that work great. I have an ICOM IC-R71, and a handheld ICOM IC-R5. It's really a great hobby.
Now, for your veiwing pleasure... To the tune of Ganster's Paradise. As I tune in the valley's and I check out my gain, this signal is booming, something I can't explain! But that's ok to an expert like me, cause this mod sim **** ain't nuttin' but theory, Early in the mornin' Ima tunin' in, and I'm checkin' RF flow with a signal gen. so I patch a few connections here and there. got so many harmonics that my signals square! I make some adjustments and I look at my scope. now the spectrum is clear, this **** is dope...fool It's the kinda signal that ya really wanna see FSK modulation with spectral centricity Oh man this tunin is nice, living in a RF paradise, Oh man this tunin is nice, living in a RF paradise, We're spendin most of our lives, tunin in a RF paradise, We're spendin most of our lives, tunin in a RF paradise. I've got a situation with antenuation, tryin to listen to a signal from across the nation. So I gotta get this voice comin' strong, It could be solar flares, but I might be wrong I'm an engineer with propagation on my mind. A TDR's in my hand, and i'm testin' lines LPA to my left, a dipole on my right, LNA's in my pocket, make that signal look tight.. fool now the sun is settin, and now I'm bettin', these temperature inversions, make that signal jettin' It's 630 now, my transmission is flowin, so long and far it just keeps on goin, how come we, have no theories, how antenna's work? It boggles me. (Chorus) |

LOL that is a hoot.
Packed in the garage somewhere is a HW-301/401 I built, with a 1K amp. What I could put on the air real quick is my ICOM-251 for the car, a Yaesu FT-60 hand held, and if I dug out some of the coaxial antennas I built, an ICOM-720A. If life slows down I might have to do that.

2M & 10M long time ago.... old KA6xxx. Pops was into it pretty heavy. Had lots of fun modding the 858 chip CB's. <26.005 up into the 28.000's
Those freqs & 1kw, would kill all the phones and tvs around the neighborhood.. Hey remember the first EFI cars, 400 watts would make them stumble pretty good too Not to forget playing star-wars with the florescent tubes in the street(lit up by the rf) Thanks for bringing back some memories |

Shortly after Marconi sent the first trans Atlantic radio message the day of Amateur Radio Operators was born. Often referred to as HAM's - can't tell you what the acronym stands for though.
Equipment has moved from crystals and batteries, tubes, coils, and capacitors to tune a circuit to full solid state marvels. HAM's have often been at the fore front of communications. In the early 70's hams were bouncing radio signals off of the Mood and comet tails talking to each other. My first computer was specifically for my HAM radio work and was a Zilog Z-80 processor, with 1K of RAM running Basic. When I got 8K or RAM thought I had died and gone to heaven. And thanks to Wikipedia: Amateur radio operators are also known as radio amateurs or hams. The term 'ham' as a nickname for amateur radio operators originated in a pejorative usage by operators in commercial and professional radio communities. The word was subsequently welcomed by amateur radio operators, and it stuck. An amateur radio operator who has died is referred to by other amateur radio operators as a silent key,[2] and the suffix /SK is appended to his or her callsign.[3] At any major disaster or event like a State Fair look for the guys in the dayglow vest. They are helping with crowd control, lost children, etc. I know you wanted to know what time it was and I told you how to build the clock.

Not legally. It is intended for non-commercial person to person contact/communications. The only real exception is an Amateur Radio Club or disaster situation when you have a "net" (group of operators in the field) being communicated to and directed by a single station called Net Control.

Glad I could help foster some memories! now perhaps you could help a young man, such as I, to build his own transceiver. I have looked online, but am having trouble finding out how to build my own. I probably could afford a newer one, (looking at an Icom HF one) but I think it would be better for me to make one first. Any help would be great!
