Touch Up Paint From Your Hobby Store

I had a small scuff on the side of my rear tail panel right on the corner. I was gonna order a bottle of Colorite next month but I read online where someone painted ZX-10R fairings with Tamiya model spray paint. I stopped by the hobby store and picked up a small bottle of Tamiya Light Green Paint color code X-15 for 2 bucks. Its the color Tamiya recommends you paint their Kawi bike models with. I touched up the area tonight and so far it looks pretty good. I will check on it tomorrow to see how it turns out dry.

After applying a few coats I let the paint dry. It didnt turn out quite as good as I expected. You can still see where the spot is. The Tamiya paint dried just a little darker then the green on my bike. Another thing I didnt factor in is that the Tamiya paint is acrylic. Im not sure how well it would hold up afer a few months of riding in the elements.

Thanks for the pics, Brad. Certainly not a perfect match, but much better than the black mark that was there previously.

And thanks again for the heads up on the paint.

You won't see it unless you're looking for it. Good find!

a good trick for touching up paint is using a match, the ripped off part from the cardboard

I think that if you would have did a white base color before you applied the green it might match a little better. Since the tamiya paint is a light green the black will show right through. It's never too late to redo it ask one of your girl friends for her white nail polish and accetone. You might even be able to get away with using the clear too.

I was thinking the same thing about the white base. Im pretty sure it would make a difference.

Wouldn't doing 2 or more coats do the same thing as a white base??

Tamiya also makes oil-based hobby paints, but they are not usually carried in hobby stores except by special order. I wouldn't think the acrylic would hold up too well without a clear coat of some kind. Tamiya also makes quite a few shades of green in the acrylic, including a "clear" green that's almost transparent. I'm sure you'd get a better match by mixing in a little white base to the green you're using. Considering how many Kawi models Tamiya has put out, I'm surprised their shade of Kawi Green is so different than what's on the bike.

White base coat will deffinately lighten up the green.

I can't resist... do the Color Right the 1st time and move forward.....25.90 with shipping Colorrite for primer pen, kawi color pen, and clear coat pen... uh huh a perfect match rather than saving a few bucks and the pens should last quite a while... mine are still full and on standby for the unexpected.... oh yeah!

Lets hope they sit there on the shelf and you don't have to use them.

lol Snake... more often I'm concerned about the Service Dept. laying down a scratch or 2 when they work on my bike for any particular reason. I go over it with a fine tooth comb when I get it back.... thats predominately the reason I now store a supply!

I had been thinking about using it as a cheap way to paint my mirrors. Still not sure about it but looks to be pretty close and i can always take it off.
