What's this odd sound?

Valves tapping?

Also running on 87 octane. I forgot to bump it up. Looks like I need to bump up the mains as well. Currently using 40 pilots and 110 mains with stock air box. SAE 30 oil.

Not 100% which sound but maybe cam chain? maybe your CCT is loosing tension? When you were on the right side of the bike by the Cam Chain i could hear it but again not sure if that is what you are talking about and it didn't sound terrible.

it sounds like 2 things. your cam chain hitting the chain guide. probably stretched. and also one or two of your intake valves is way loose. like WAY loose.

also there is another sound... not sure what it is... maybe the clutch or crank. its an odd wobble. hard to tell, could be background noise.

I think I found the problem. Not timed:

Because I forgot to install this:

Found it missing and found it under my pile of rags.

Are you missing some teeth on the cam sprocket/gear or just the way it looks?

110 Mains with stock air box seems way too rich.

Most people I know are running 92 to 98 with stock airbox.

It's just the shadow that makes it look like it's missing teeth.

i *think* with this engine skipping a tooth slowly like in your case, it will stop firing before the valves hit. so you would have to jump timing with the bike in gear & moving or use the starter to bend a valve from bad timing right? maybe wrong with this engine.

I'm thinking my chain is stretched. I'll have to measure it tomorrow. The cam chain guide I forgot was on the exhaust side but it should be okay since the exhaust side chain is under tension since the engine rotates counter clockwise. Odd thing is why does the FSM say to rotate clockwise? I attached the section 2-22 where it states so.

Either way, I am willing to attempt to replace the chain without splitting the case. What prevents you from replacing the cam chain is the guide/stay loop thing. I could grind at it and cut it out to where the chain can get through and loop around.

Only issue is I'm having shifting issues. I can shift into first but afterwards I hit a hard false neutral trying to shift into second and same goes trying to get into first.

I believe you rotate clockwise to keep the flywheel bolt from coming undone.

Keep us updated on the progress.

Well I found the source of the noise.........

The pistons were slapping against the exhaust valves and head. 1-2 tooth retarded on the exhaust cam? I'm surprised the motor even ran as it is which leaves me wondering if the exhaust valves are now bent. I didn't check piston to valve to head clearances before closing everything up

Now I got to recheck all the bearings to make sure I didn't damage them.... Joyous me.

How did you end up 1-2 teeth off? Did you line everything up per the manual?

Sorry to see but glad you found it early.
