Check your oil level! If it's overfull you have a carb overflowing and filling a cylinder which then runs between the piston and cylinder and fills the crankcase. Or it may be as simple as the gauge not working properly, or a hole in the tank. Of course if there is a hole there should be gas under the bike.
Ps: If the carbs overflowed, don't try to start it! Pss: welcome to the board!

I know you said the fuel gage reads empty but have you opened the gas cap and looked inside? As Roger mentioned it could be a faulty gage.

Yep - open the gas cap and check to see what the level looks like. It's more likely it's a faulty gauge than the gas somehow escaped the bike another way.

The gauge is slow on these. It takes a minute or two after you turn on the key.

I have another bike that will flash to say nearly empty, when on side stand & in a couple of seconds of having up right will go to half a tank ! Just the gauge in the tank sticking at an angle.

my instrument cluster...
...has a loose wire or corroded connection. This makes both the tach and fuel dials 'dead' until I thumb the cluster.
