Oil Leak - Damaged Thread
Hey everyone, I hope this finds you well. I found an oil leak coming from the plug near the oil filter (see attached). The bolt did not tighten so I thought the bolt thread was damaged. When I removed the bolt, I saw that it isn't the bolt thread, but the hole thread that is damaged (see attached). Any ideas on how to fix this? I opened the service manual to find out what this plug is for but it seems like its just a secondary drain plug?

I recommend contacting a machine shop, and taking bike there to have a threaded insert installed.

Yes, that's drain plug. Other big bolt removes oil-filtre. But can get very messy if used for draining as well.
One way to fix is drill & tap for next size up and use larger drain bolt. I'd recommend having machine shop do this. You can remove oil-pan from engine to bring to them. Easier than trying to flip bike upside down under drill-press. Other way is use solid-metal insert like EZ-lok or Time-sert. Helicoils will unwind out after 4-5 oil-changes. You want stronger more durable solid insert. Again, machine shop can do this as well. Last futzed with by DannoXYZ; August 16th, 2023 at 08:21 PM. |

There are plugs made to seal a stripped drain hole. I have no experience with any of them. Maybe someone else here has used one and can tell us how well it worked.
