Didn't crash but had a close call

So I've had my license for a total of 14 days and I've done about 950kms of riding here and there whenever I get a chance in the evening after work. I sometimes go on the highway at off times to get practice.

Today was my third time on the hwy doing a practice run. I was in the very left lane going at traffic speed around 115km/h. I have a tendency to check my mirrors once or twice a minute in my car and on the bike. In my right side mirror I saw a car coming in from the merging lane at high speed. I didn't think much of it until I saw him move another lane and in a blink of an eye this guy was shooting straight for me in the left most lane (4 lanes in total think). Well sure he ended up right in front of me with maybe one car length separating us. However he was not at my speed yet (crappy old civic). Anyways I breaked hard and went on to the shoulder to avoid him. I recovered pretty quickly and was on my again in no time. I'm just glad I check the mirrors.

Tl;dr check your mirrors often. It might save you some grief. Also ATGATT (pants, gloves, boots, helmet and jacket)

You did well avoiding a collision with a combination of slowing down and evading maneuver!!

Caveat: Be quick on the mirrors because they may become a target fixation.

It is extremely important that you keep your eyes looking forward as much as possible.

The most accidents happen from the front and little from behind.
