Dunlop vs pirelli

Anyone have experience with pirelli and/or dunlop slicks for the small bikes? If so what did you think of them?

Thanks

We have Dunlop slicks on our CRF150R Supermoto (https://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=323198) and my son likes them, but they will slide more than he expected.

He may try a different brand (not sure which) this season. I think there are only a couple choices in the small sizes we need.

I'll say that we have had numerous sets of Pirelli tires, both cycle (Ninja 250) and auto, and they all have dried and lost traction before they should have. I'm no longer buying any Pirelli tires.

Those Dunlops are Moto3 / 125 slicks right? I imagine they work better on that 150R as they are constructed for a pretty light bike to begin with. I am curious about the difference between the Moto3 slick construction and the ULWT slick construction (the 110/140 )

I asked this same question of a racer here that has used both pretty extensively (he's one of those guys that has to test everything, I love him!).

Pirellis are stickier in general for similar conditions. The flip side of that is that they tend to break loose a little less predictably.

The Dunlops are a little less sticky, but more predictable.

The deciding factor for me (I'm not out to win championships) is that the Dunlops can take ~50+ heat cycles and barely change their grip characteristics. The Pirellis, even if you're relatively easy on tires and don't wear them out, start losing their grip ability after 15-20 heat cycles.

This is probably why jkv45 has the experience he does with Pirellis.

QC has gone downhill with Pirelli. My track buddies have been returning Pirellis more and more. Many are considering jumping ship.

I really like Bridgestone R11. Built first as race tyre and had grooves put in to pass DOT requirements.

^^ I'm on the RS11s as well and seem pretty happy but I also didn't have issues with the Pirellis either

My son is planning to run Bridgestone VO2 slicks on the CRF next time around.

One line I recall is "Pirellis hold you up with the hand of god... until they don't" with Dunlops being compared similarly to what you said. This was for Superbike sized slicks, but I suspect it applies across the line. I like Perelli on my Ninja and Dunlop on the bigger bikes.

At my level of performance, i don’t think neither Pirelli nor Dunlop would make much difference in my laptimes. Professional teams running them note differences of 1-sec or less with Pirelli going bat*ss stink fast at first. But fading away by end of race while Dunlops keeping steady pace and being faster at end.

I heard that the pirellis had faster lap times but dropped off sooner. Was wondering with the small bikes if the faster lap times lasted longer. Interesting about the heat cycle comment from the previous comment. Would makes sense since pirelli has a softer carcass than it would be less robust than the harder dunlop carcass

The real 'problem' with Pirellis is not just the drop off -- it's that the drop off doesn't really give you as much feel so it's easier to suddenly lose it rather than feel it slipping and know you need to back off. I still love them on my 300 and have never had an issue, so your suspicion may be correct. I also will admit that my own perception of tire feel is very poor so I'd probably miss the Dunlop signalling me too :P
