Front/rear tire off without stand?
So I have a question and it might be kinda stupid(well I think it is anyways haha) So i have my bike up in Jersey for the summer and all my stands are at home in florida and I know no one up here with a bike(or stands for that matter)
My question is there a safe way to take my front and rear tire off without stands as I want to get my rear sprocket and front break rotor hub powder coated? I know theres probably some ghetto way of doing it but I want my bike to be safe, which leads me to believe there is no way or else why would anyone buy a stand haha. Well if there is such a way please let me know |

Long bolts and jackstands for the rear..on the front, maybe suspend it from a rafter or something like that?

Front foot pegs? The long bolts for the rear would be put where the spools would go..not where the pegs are.

Yes understand that would be to hold the rear up. For the front you could take the front footpegs out and instal a long bolt there for onother set of jackstands to hold up the fron. Never tried but just a thought.

Hmm I like the idea of the rear...how stable would the front idea be since that's more like holding up the middle

i did this recently when i had wheels off to replace tires.
i wanted to have the bike on something other than the center stand for obvious safety reasons. unfortunately i didn't have anything to do that with. i ended up using the center stand and it got spooooky, so avoid that at all costs! pay attention where you're placing your jackstands or hoist points if suspending from a rafter so ya dont damage anything on the bike that cant handle the weight.

You guys think the front foot peg location(if they didnt fold) would hold the front up??
I put the front pegs on jack stands to hold the rear up, to change the shock on my other bike. |

Matt,
Do you have access to any type of jack, preferably a hydraulic floor jack? |

raise the rear of the bike with the bolts and jackstand idea earlier. once you get the rear end lifted and stable, lift the front of the bike using the floor jack from under the engine. put a piece of wood between the jack and the engine to prevent marring the engine case. I would do this with the side fairings off so you can see better where you are lifting from. be careful where you place the wood under the engine. try to find a flat a spot as you can.
once you get the front end up, lower the front jack down onto another set of jackstands positioned at the footpeg area. leave the floor jack as the main support jack for the front. the footpeg jackstands are in case the floor jack loses hydraulic pressure and drops. the bike should be stable enough using the 5 jack points. how long do you anticipate it will remain this way? |

an alternate would be to set the rear up on the jackstands, raise the front w/ the floor jack and use straps on the handlebars from a strong beam in the garage to hold the front end up, as mentioned earlier. bad part about this is that you need to place the bike where the beam is located which may get in the way in the shop. Even though, keep the floor jack under the engine as a backup.

Kerry, it took 14 posts to get from ingenuity to common sense. Good work.
