hand signals?

Ok I am new to riding to start things off. Is it a common thing for a rider to put their left arm down when they ride by you. I have seen riders put their left arm down when they ride past me. I am not sure if its a "hey hows it goin" or not. I am just too afraid to let go of the handle bar and do it back.

normally, we do the peace sign with our left hand when we see fellow sports rider. if you are in hawaii, the shaka sign works also

It's just a biker way of saying hi and acknowledging your share a common interest. If you give the wave and other guy does nothing it just means they are a grouchy old fart and don't worry about. If he takes his hand off his handle bar and puts it on his leg then he is diffently "dissin" you but see above (grouchy old fart).

If you search "hand signals" you will get several threads and one is on "Saying hi to other bikers".

Click the link and you get a good background.

If you go by another biker and he waves it usually means he is gay and wants to meet you. If you wave back it back you're OK with that. If you go by a biker and he doesn't wave it means he wants to kick the shite out of you and if you stop he will get you. If you go by a girl on a bike and you wave it means you're a perv and you want to throw her down. If you go by a girl rider and she waves it means she can kick your ass and you look like a fairy on your bike. If you just nod to other riders it means you are a newbie, gay, perv, or too afraid to let go of the handle bars.

Man we sure missed your witty humor yesterday. You find humor in everything. Good way to stay young at heart. It works for me.

Seems C.C. has a preoccupation with gay, perverts and their communicative skills in the biking world!

where i live (in Harley ville) most of the sportster riders will wave, half of the dyna/softail/fatboy crowd will wave, and like none of the full dresser gray bearded riders even look at you. oh well at least my right hand grip won't end up wearing out any faster than my left grip.

So you are the gay biker that rode past me this morning. Good thing I was too afraid to take my hands off the handle bars. you might have tried to chase after me to do some of your perverted cowboy stuff.

Haha, thanks CC Cowboy, that made be chuckle.

Bikers have hand signal etiquette over here, too, btw. On country roads, I'd say about 3 of 4 wave or nod or something. Scooter riders never wave, however, and there's generally less of this stuff in city traffic.

I wave at everyone. I even get a lot of waves on the Spyder surprisingly. I get more on the Ninja though. Most everyone waves, others are either pricks or newbs.

...or those who think they ride because they own a bike and put in about 500 miles a year.

You can spot them from a mile away. They are always looking straight down at the speedo and don't see anything else.

this may help you a little.
http://www.ama-cycle.org/roadride/groupRideSignals.asp

they did leave out the most important hand signal though. patting your head signifies to other riders that there is a speed trap / cop ahead (actually that site lists that gesture as 'high beam' but I've only ever seen / heard it used for what i described)

It is the most important signal, but you can't expect them to publish that.
