Sierra Adventure IV

WHAT:
A ride for fellow Ninjetters to explore mountain roads at a easy/moderate pace.

WHY:
News is coming out that the passes are opening and I'm itching to ride them. Want to come ride with me?

WHO: Unregistered and friends.
Just putting out this feeler to see if you would be interested and when you are available. Though I would prefer you have some experience riding mountain roads, if a new/inexperienced rider really wants to come along, shoot me a PM or post here and let's talk so I know where you are coming from and you know what I'm planning on getting us into. I want everyone to have fun, and let riders explore safely, so if we both feel comfortable having you take on something new, I'll do what I can to make it enjoyable for all of us.

WHEN:
Updated Possibly plan for Saturday, August 8th

WHERE:
The route will probably focus between I-80 (Truckee) and SR 120 (Yosemite) but may shift a bit due to where everyone is coming from. More than likely will be around the region of Mosquito Ridge Road, Ebbetts Pass, and Sonora Pass.

HOW:
I'm looking at a moderately lengthy day of 300 miles plus or minus 50 miles (so two gas tanks) of mostly twisty roads through one of the most scenic regions I've ridden through. The roads are good, with some rough patches from weather, though they are narrow two lane or single lane width on the edge of a steep mountain. Luckily, there is little to no traffic. Plan on a lunch stop at the midway point and several picture stops to enjoy the area and stretch.

@tfkrocks, @EMSRacer07, @chrly, @antiant, @iamjacob, @algs26, @misfitsailor, @allanoue, and @LittleRedNinjette can all comment on how I ride and if my assessment of my pace is fair.

Pinging potential folks: @Kevin1956, @greenaero, @twistywrist, @Alex (will you be alive or dead on the couch never wanting to see a bike again?).

Let's play!!!

Not sure I'm in yet (calendar may or may not be open), but I'm definitely interested, so I'll keep watching this thread. It's a 4h30min drive for me, so I'd check into a hotel or something the night before, if I go. I can attest to NevadaWolf's riding style, she's a good leader and her pace was fine for me as a noob (I'm still a noob ).

Looking at my schedule, the last weekend in July is possible depending on work travel. If the ride gets pushed back into August I have more availablility.
Thank you for organizing this ride, I would really love to ride with y'all.

I'm game for an August ride. Would Aug. 8th or 15th be good options?

One of the reasons I put this up so early was to hear what people can do and build the plan around it.

Have heard from anotheer Ninjetter who plans on being "in my neck of the woods" early August.

So, how does August 8th sound to everyone?

Alright, so now that my big ride is out of the way, time to focus on the next ride!

So far sounds like most of those interested are located between Sacramento and Livermore. If that is the case, I'll focus my route somewhere around that area, leaving myself and @antiant traveling the farthest.

A really simple route would be Hwy 50 east over Echo Summit, then south through Luther Pass on Hwy 89, west again over Carson Pass on 88, south on 49, back east on 4 over Ebbetts Pass, then a short hop over Monitor Pass on 89, south again on 395 to 108 over Sonora Pass and call it a day. Google says 360 miles, just over 8 hours.

Plus side: numerous bail out points to shorter the day, plenty of gas stations, food options all over, and oodles of scenery.

Down side: Very common routes over the Sierra so may be familiar to most riders.

An alternative is just east of Sutter Creek, around the Volcano area. BestBikingRoads is showing a lot of squiggly lines, about half of which I've done and can result is a very twisty day with low miles.

That one looks like it'd be really fun, but have quite a few out and back legs but I can work on linking them so it doesn't get annoying.

Opinions?

Also tagging @Old Guy on a '08

I'm still interested, but I have a potential problem that may limit my participation, as well as a logistical question.

First the question:
Since people are coming from different directions, do those farthest from the starting point just do a long ride before the long ride, or meet at points along the way (how exactly would that work)?

Now the problem:
So I figured out what all that lower back and hip pain is all about... apparently, I've got a bulging disk in L5, which makes sitting very uncomfortable. I've been at the chiropractor 3X per week this month, and am motivated to get better ASAP! I'd like to participate as much as I reasonably can, but it wouldn't be wise for the group to plan around me since I can't make guarantees at this point. Since the ride is reasonably close enough to me (Folsom), I'll try to participate in whatever way my body allows. I doubt I'll be able to do the full mileage, but we'll see.

In regards to the route (regardless of back pain):

Re:Proposed Option 1 - I've done the 88-89-50 loop part (backward to your proposed direction) at the beginning of the season, and it was nice.

The only part I did that deviated from the loop was (coming from 49) I tried Fiddletown Rd to Shake Ridge Rd to connect to 88, which cut off about a third of 88. This little detour looks nice on the map, but in reality I didn't like that part (too slow, and road conditions aren't great), BUT the rest was good! I know this detour wasn't part of your proposal, but thought I'd mention it in case anyone wondered about those two roads.

If the group went with option 1 as proposed, due to health and location, I'd likely pick it up when the group came through Jackson (That's a lot of zigzagging up and down those Sierras, LOL. Nothing wrong with that though). Overall it sounds like a pretty solid ride. If I'm able to due the second half, this half would be new to me.

Re: Proposed Option 2 - I like this idea in theory. If the roads get me out of my seat it would be easier on the back, but looking at the map I see the two roads I mentioned earlier that were kind of disappointing. Those really are the only ones I've been on that are off the main highways, so I'm interested in hearing what roads you're thinking about.

The way it worked last time was those of us coming from afar either rode down the night before and got a hotel (@chrly and me ended up in the same town by coincidence) or rode in the morning of (everyone else). I pick a place/time at the starting point and it's really up to you how you get there. If you post up your plans and it aligns with someone else coming in, you guys can make joint plans.

This is the big reason I want to know who's interested. I try to make the start and end somewhat middleish to be the least inconvienent for everyone.

No problem.

This is all about fun and enjoyment and only a little bit about pushing mileage limits. I overplan and then try to build in bail out points for those who either decide enough is enough or for those who have long rides home and want to cut out early. Example on our last ride involved a trip over Tioga Pass. ma Nature decided she wanted to test out her rain and snow making equipment while we were up in Yosemite Valley. Plans can easily change.

I was looking at Fiddletown Road as it comes into the Volcano route I've done and was trying to link sections up in non highway connections.

This option really is for the "just want to ride on good roads" approach and that I'm familiar enough with to lead well.

Yeah, its the area around Volcano, mostly goat roads, narrow back country canyon twisties that are slow speed with a patchy road. Part of the route I took @tfkrocks on, but with added roads for me that I've never been on. Trying to get a screen shot of the map, but the browser keeps crashing.

This option is more the "bored with the main roads, let's find some interesting back roads" approach. Hehehe

@NevadaWolf I know the browser keeps crashing, but if you could provide a map of the possible route, that would be appreciated. I am undecided, as it's really going to depend on how far out this is for me (ie: meeting point, traveling the night before, hotel costs, etc.)

I'll get maps up tomorrow using the other computer I have. For some reason my tablet is having an issue. I am being bad on that and I do apologize. Both options will be available for viewing as soon as I can.

I tend not to worry when they call in the wolf.

This Option 2 may not be the most exciting (although I may be wrong since I haven't been on all those roads), but it would be the easiest for me to participate in since the start is the closest to Folsom. I could fairly easily do what I can do and bail when my body screams at me.

I was down around Columbia last weekend. The road is narrow, patchworked, and slow, but oh so twisty.

So the options are really Highways or Goatish Roads?

Again, routes can be shortened so don't think that the given map is the must do plan.

@antiant yeah looked like it was too far north for you. I need to plan better and get two adventures out a year, northern sierra and southerrn sierra.
@wardie huh? I wasn't expecting you to make the trip out here just to do this little ride. When you get out this way, if you want to team up, I'll give you a massive tour worth the miles to get out here.

So three weekends away, suppose I should focus on exactly how I'm going to go where...?

@NevadaWolf : I was looking at your proposed route maps. I was up on CA 88 over the weekend, and wanted to let you know much of the highway between Caples Lake and Silver Lake, around Kirkwood, etc., has just received a bunch of paving work. These were absolutely the worst sections of the entire highway, having been badly chewed up by tire chains over the last several winters. It now has a new, glass smooth, coating of fresh asphalt over some long stretches. It's good and sticky! It's fast! It's really, really nice!

Before you decide on a route, you may want to check for future road work. It's also forest fire season, and when that happens roads can get closed too. The number to call for Cal-Trans Highway Conditions is 1-800-427-7623. Once connected, just punch in the highway number.

Trust me, I've been glued to CalFire and CalTrans for my own uses and to keep an eye on the area. And I too was up on 88 on Sunday, exploring the back roads between it and Mormon Emigrant. Beautiful area, love that playground.

Who needs to call?

I might have one more, need to get in touch and see what's up.

So back roads or mountain passes? Or meet in Placerville and wing it?
