Cool!

But here's something to consider:

The very best way to NOT see anything interesting -- to completely bypass what makes America amazing -- is to travel the Interstates. That route sounds like 1230 miles of tedium to me.

If you possibly can, take a little extra time, get some road maps (you remember those... big sheets of paper) and look for squiggly lines. Take those routes instead.

There are two ways to look at travel. Your first priority will either be to reach your destination, or to have an adventure along the way.

If the former, why punish yourself? Just fly and get it over with. If the point is to get there, then presumably you want to be there, not in transit.

If the latter, why take the most boring route possible? Be an explorer! Find the beautiful little towns that you NEVER see from the superslab. Find an amazing restaurant nobody knows about. Avoid the bleak sameness of homogenized franchises of all sorts (try that on an Interstate -- bet you can't).

I did a tour on my Ninjette six years ago. Went to Indianapolis for MotoGP. I did have to get there in a certain number of days so did do a fair bit of superslab on the way out... but I had time for the return so I went to AAA, got maps of most of the East Coast, and looked for squiggly lines. There were lots in West Virginia, so I went that way. Amazing trip... new discoveries every day.

I read through the lines and it seems that you are not in your twenties (two daughters in college?).. Being an older guy and new to motorcycles myself, I'd make sure that ergonomics will not hurt, and I mean physically hurt, after long time on the bike. On my '11 my wrists are in pain after about two hours of riding, while are absolutely fine on shorter trips. Make sure you are not suffering on your bike after an hour or two in the saddle.

New to bikes and third month experience? Not saying it's impossible, but it'll be difficult.

Most of the stories I've heard of folks just being able to jump into an Iron Butt long distance ride right off the bat have some experience under their belt. The rest build up to it in the beginning. Mad props if you are one of those riders who can hop on and just go.

Personally, if it was my first long ride, I'd just plan on going 2/3 of the way and build a day two into the schedule for the rest of the miles. That way you can go as far as you feel safe with no pressure to get there on time. If you make it in one day, awesome! If not, no worries.

For comparison, on my '12 250, my average Saddlesore pace is around 17-18 hours for 1000 miles and change (1020-1050 is what I aim for). My BunBurner Gold pace puts the 1000 mile mark around 15.5-16 hours. I've yet to do any of these rides in heavy traffic, so this is with wide open 70mph roads.

Enjoy your ride to see your daughters!

Tips from personal experience:

- Keep moving around on the bike -- all the time. Soreness/stiffness comes from locking into one position for hours on end.

- Rest your chest on the tank bag or tank when you can. Get the weight off your butt and your wrists.

- Stop once per hour whether you think you need to or not, get off the bike and walk around for a minute.

- Don't overdo the day. 400 miles is plenty.

I have done the very same trip in car and, just regarding safety, I advise against you trying that with zero riding experience.

I believe the trip is too dangerous because there are many traffic and road hazards for your current skill level and knowledge to deal with in a safe manner.

Your level of risk will decrease drastically after a few months of intense practice and study and daily traffic commuting.

His first three bits of advice I'll echo. Being comfortable is the key to successfully doing any ride, especially a long one. I suspect that you have not done much to alter the ergonomics of your bike. After this ride, you'll have a laundry list of what needs changing to fit you.

The fourth bit is totally reliant on goal and mindset. For him, 400 miles is a long enough day. For me, 400 miles is about half way. Completely different approaches to riding and entirely dependent on you as the rider. Your personal daily limit comes from experience, these numbers are just recommendations from other riders.

My personal advice is built from the IBA's archive of wisdom, so I usually just link to that. It's good advice if you are going a certificate ride or just going out and doing your own ride. http://www.ironbutt.com/tech/aowprintout.cfm

I do 1225 miles up the east coast (in a car), to see my son at school in RI, often. It's a 16 hour ride with no stops (at a pinch or 75mph). Any time you stop (gas, eat, ticket), slow down (toll, traffic, scenery), you have to add to the time. I believe you are going to be for a shock if you think you can do it 19 hours. It will be more like two or three days.

I remember a kid from NY riding a 250 down to Miami, Fl. We didn't hear back from him in months.

You might have seen much of the East Coast but if you haven't done it on a motorcycle it doesn't count. If you can, take your time and do the Blue Ridge Parkway for most of the trip. If you are taking a motorcycle you have to enjoy the ride. It's no fun riding alongside of trucks and morons texting in cars. Ride the countryside and take in the beauty of the ride.

P.S. Put your back pack on the bike, don't wear it.

Please, please, don't ride in Miami !!!

Those crazy drivers South of Golden Glades Interchange will push you off I-95 without even blinking.

If you must do it, stay West, use Turnpike / Sawgrass Expressway/ I-75.

Damn those 250's must have a lot better stock seat than the 300's do. I take a ride to Ocala and back and I am ready to get off that bike.
(all right maybe I can do 4 hours but that's tops )

Although I believe OP has pregen and the pregen was a very comfortable bike IIRC

(all right maybe I can do 4 hours but that's tops )
The pregens seat was amazing. I could ride on that all day without any problems. (It has a banana seat) The newgen ninja 250's seat was the worst even more so than the 300.

That is the average for these bikes for sustained 75~80 mph.

Did you stop for sleeping or kept going for those 24 hours?

All I-95 through Richmond and Washington?
How was the traffic on those areas?
Did you encounter rain or strong crosswind?

I though that you were get on 81.
