[visordown.com] - Jenny Tinmouth to be role model for schoolgirls

Jenny Tinmouth

JENNY Tinmouth, the fastest ever female TT racer, will be helping to inspire the next generation of sports women at an event in London this Wednesday.

Tinmouth, also the only female British Superbike racer, is part of the Inspiring Women campaign, which aims to show schoolgirls the range of careers open to them.

She will be one of a number of role models talking to 300 schoolgirls about their careers in sport.

Tinmouth, 36, signed for Honda Racing’s BSB squad last month. In 2010 she set the current female TT lap record of 119.945mph.

She will meet girls from 18 state schools at the Inspiring Women in Sport event at London's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Tinmouth will be joined by motocross racer Catherine King, 19, who competes on the Honda Rider programme with backing from Bristol-based dealership Fowlers.

The Inspiring Women campaign aims to reach 250,000 girls in state schools across the country. Inspiring Women in Sport is a week of events in which women working in sport talk to girls about their career and experiences.

With no sense of irony, Honda announced Tinmouth's involvement with a statement from a man in sport.

A press release said: 'Havier Beltran, Racing Manager at Honda had no hesitation in getting behind the initiative: “In bike racing, there’s been a focus on females recently because Honda has just signed Jenny to its Superbike squad, meaning that she’s racing at the top level. But there are a number of women racing already for Honda, competing with the very best. This year’s Dakar Rally saw Laia Sanz finish in the top 10 - the highest finishing spot for a woman – and, in motocross, Catherine is joined at Honda by fellow championship-winner, Natalie Kane.

'“Honda is proud to have served up a number of firsts when it comes to women racers. Jenny is living proof that women can race at elite level and riders like Catherine show that there’s an exciting youth crop coming through the ranks. We’ll see plenty more women racing alongside men in the future, I’m sure of that.”'
