Unhappy Ninja 250 power loss at high RPM

Hello everyone, this is my first time posting on my new account, my ninja 250 (88-07) model sputters and suddenly looses it power between 7500 - 9000 RPM and then once I hit 9500 rpm all my power come right back, I have to down shift to get my rpms to 10k to go above 60. This has been an on going issue for awhile now. I have cleaned both carbs twice, cleaned the air filter and changed the spark plugs, drained and cleaned the tank 3 times and I have run seafome threw the engine more times than I can count. Nothing seems to work and I really don't like having to take my engine to redline to drive above 60, the bike used to run great and have all the power in the world, now it's like a moped once you go above 60 and leaves me no choice but to downshift to go faster and then return to the lower gear to hold my speed. I need help to determine the problem. This ninja has been well cared for and well maintained and is kept indoors when not in use. Thanks-Josh.

Hi and welcome!

Did this dropout occur gradually or suddenly?
What happened in between when it was working fine to now?

ItWhen the problem first became apparent I just turned it on one day, warmed up my ninja and drove to work during a hot summer day and as soon as I took it on the freeway I discovered that something was wrong, 6 month later the problem has not gotten any worse and has not gotten any better.

Sounds like a fueling (carb) issue to me.

When having running problems that you think may be carb related, think in terms of throttle position (1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, WOT) to help narrow-down the carb circuit that could be causing the issue.

I would say the carbs may need to come off again and be gone through professionally - meaning total disassembly and ultrasonic cleaning. We have a member here that can do that for you.

Contact "ducatiman" if you want to go that route.

I would expect it to be a carburetor problem. If Ducatiman doesn't respond soon, send him a PM and see if he can help. He's usually happy to give sound advice, even if you don't plan to send the carbs to him.

Welcome to the forum, Josh.

In meantime,

1. do gas-cap mod.
2. verify you have vacuum to petcock.
3. verify petcock flows fuel with vacuum applied
4. check carb slides, that they move through entire travel smoothly with no binding
