2007 ninja won't run? what to do.

OK. A very dear old friend brought me his son in laws bike. Its a 2007 and was ridden daily from 1200 miles when he got it . To 15000 miles it has now.
He called a year ago and said it was running poorly. I said pilot jets . But just a guess. He took it to a number of shops. They all fiddled around and gave it back.

By the time I got it. Hauled from another state. It would not start.

First thing I do is a compression test. 30 left 80 right. You need a min 125 psi cold or the engine will not start. I pulled the head and checked the valves. Adjustment was good. And the seal of the valves was tight. but carbon was built up all over the intake valves.
The cylinder looked glazed and there was carbon on top of the piston.

I pulled the carb off and sure enough the pilot jets are clogged and the idle screws are three turns out.

The problem started with the carb. But ended with a some what bad engine. He is very good about oil changes . That saved the bottom end.
But I am going to replace the pistons and rings. And hone the cylinder.

Next I will rebuild the head with new valves and valve stem seals

Then replace the carb pilot and main jets.

After assembly with new gaskets a new cam chain tensioner and fresh oil I will balance the carbs.

Total cost of the parts from cheap cycle parts was under 300 bucks. Plus the jets and valves. The whole package is less than 500 in parts.

Not bad for an old bike. Should run great when its done.

Can someone help me out. I never use factory parts. JE pistons.

The rings from Kawasaki are marked R on the silver one. And NR on the black one. I can't find my first gen manual.
Can anyone tell me which ring goes on top.

I found my service manual and assembled the bottom end. Now just some head work left to do.

Ok, the uninformed need to know. Which ring goes where? My intuition says that if neither ring is obviously a scraper ring, the silvery (Moly or Chrome) would go on top, with the black (Iron or iron/moly) on the bottom.
