Cleaning Exhaust

Hey guys, I've looked all around, did a couple searches, and haven't found any real threads about it... so if I missed one, please let me know

What have you found is the best way to clean rubber marks off of my exhaust? It comes from (mostly) my girlfriend when we ride 2up, she tends to accidentally rest her boots on or brush up against the tailpipes on occasion.

Are we talking about the stock exhaust with the chrome plating?

You could just have her ride barefoot... I assure you, she'll only put her feet on that exhaust once after that.

Is there a particular "method" you would suggest? Like heating it up first? Only doing it when it's cooled down? Towel? Dish sponge with no-scratch scrub pad? Fine steel wool?

I've been meaning to do this myself... I have a little bit of a footprint left on my exhaust. Oh and Kkim, I promise I'll use my rear breaks :P

try the Easy-Off oven cleaner. You won't believe how perfectly it works. Just spray it on a the exhaust can (hot, warm, or cool it doesn't matter).

I have used it for that... not a ton of rubber but it will take minor pieces from boots or such.. I'm just not a fan of oven cleaner.... I know it is safe.. just can't get myself to use it... I used Mothers on my 250 and now on the Yoshi can on my CBR.... I use more aggressive stuff for polished engine parts on my stang, but I still use the Mothers on some parts that don't need as much...

I always try to use the least invasive solution to a problem, first. Good to know about the Mothers polish... I'll keep that product in mind if I ever need to clean up an exhaust.

oven cleaner is indeed nasty stuff, but sometimes you just need the strongest product available to get the job done.

Easy Off works better if the pipe is warm, but keep any overspray away from your seat & plastics. That stuff seems to have a corrosive effect on everything, including bare hands. Use of rubber gloves is recommended. In fact following the directions works quite well on mufflers as well as ovens.

I use this stuff on chrome bits. Works great for removing tar, oil spots and other gunk picked up from the road. My '04 250 has the black (painted?) exhaust cans so I don't know what to use to shine those up.
