Question Bicycling and Motorcycling

What exactly can you learn on a bicycle that can later be used on a motorcycle? I guess balance, and the concept of counter-steering...anything else?

the balance part is close to useless when you deal with something that weighs 500lbs. leg strength is good... knowing how not to get hit by cars... knowing the value of gear... knowing how to pack a back pack / what you can carry with you on a bike... patience...

Popping wheelies!!! Ok, just kidding.

In all seriousness, you can play with U-turns on a bicycle and practice looking ALL THE WAY through. Hit up some mountain bike trails and you'll be able to practice cornering. Although it's different, there are many similarities such as staying loose on the bars, looking all the way through the turn, flicking the bike in esses, etc.

I'm not an expert, but I practice. I'm a master at u-turns and counter weighing the bike.

I agree with the bike u-turns not helping a whole lot with a motorcycle... 40ish lbs vs 400lbs with a way wider body and wider wheels and power being applied to the rear wheel... huge difference. In all honestly U-turns aren't all that hard :P

Mostly it's the "looking all the way through" that's easier to master on a lightweight bicycle than a gigantic motorcycle...it was for me, anyway.

You can still learn the basics of u-turning on a bicycle. For example, lean to far and if you don't have enough counter-weight, low side. Don't apply throttle at right time? Low side.

I've added 150 pounds to the back of the bike. Wasn't very evenly distributed. That's what happens when you put your older brother on the frame

IMO, balancing and maneuvering skills are secondary to exposure.

I pedalled over 10k miles before I got my first car, nearly 20k mi. before my first motorcycle.

Since 1999, I've ridden well over 100k mi. on different motorcycles. I attribute my accident free motorcycling since 2003 to my bicycling ability.

Riding a bicycle on public roads exposes you to stupidity of drivers and situations that require reflex reaction that could be opposite of common conception.

I remember riding a bicycle to school and everywhere else I needed to go, nowaday, kids can't even walk few blocks to catch a school bus, how well our society have progressed.

Mountain biking teaches how to deal with uneven/loose surfaces. Ride some slow technical stuff on a mountain bike, and suddenly your motorcycle control in a parking lot will be that much better.

Over all, the physics of a bicycle are identical to those of a motorcycle. Only difference is that a bicycle is much more easily affected by body english due to the fact that it weighs so much less. If you can get good on a bicycle, it will help the motorcycling.

I've learn a lot you all have just said. For example, riding on gravel/dirt, when I go into a very low lean I know when to put my foot out to stop from low siding. I can even brake while turning my front wheel to left or right and lock it, sliding it over gravel, coming to a stop. I will never do any of this on a ninjette

I know you did all that but you lean far and almost lowside and do stuff like a motorcycle. Do you pretend like your on a motorcycle when riding a bike. Have fun keep it up. X]

Well I am mountain biker and you can learn many things that transfer. Most have already been mentioned. But one thing that transfers and hasn't been mentioned yet is, Crashing is going to hurt! I haven't gone down on my motorcycle yet so I don't know how it will compare to crashing on a mountain bike(I have done that multiple times) but I imagine it is gonna be worse.
