[American Motorcyclist Association] - Emmett Sund: AMA Youth Ice Racer of the Year

Ten-year-old Emmett Sund from Edgerton, Wis., captured the award for AMA Youth Ice Racer of the Year at the 2015 AMA Ice Race Grand Championship in his hometown on Feb. 14-15.

Sund won the 65cc modified class and took second in the 85cc modified class at the event.

Sund started racing dirt track when he was 7-years-old, but it wasn’t until this past weekend, when his parents’ brought him out to Lake Koshkonong, that he competed in his first ice race.

It was -13 degrees on Saturday and mere 9 degrees on Sunday, and that doesn’t include the wind chill.

Sund said sometimes the cold gets to him, but not too much. He enjoys being able to slide his bike on the ice.

“Winning AMA Ice Racer of the Year makes me really happy,” Sund says. He says he was hoping to win, but wasn’t expecting to.

Trisha Sund, Emmett’s mom, says, “We were really surprised. We didn’t even know that this award existed. This was his first ice race competition ever. He races dirt track in summer, and we thought this was just another way for him to get practice on the bike. We are really honored for him to get this award. He tries so hard, always practicing during the weekends on his friend’s pond.”

Trisha also mentioned that at school this year, Emmett’s class wrote New Year’s Resolutions and his resolution was to win the district championship.

“After receiving this award, we believe he has surpassed his resolution,” Trisha says.
