Nearly smashed into the wall by a cager
My god... Have you ever had some cager simply just come over on you and just say f you pretty much? Because today I was just passing (was close to the front of his car so he could have easily seen me next to him) by a current gen gold toyota camry and the asshole started to come over on me as I saw him move slightly I laid my finger on my horn and then the asshole just continued to come over which pushed me into a turning lane with him towards the left. I started braking hard and locked my front brakes twice causing me to wobble but I instinctive remembered to let go of the fronts when that happens. Then I fishtailed a bit but caught that too, and what was really bad is I'm here trying to not get hit and this mofo is just kinda slowing down next to me as I'm trying to keep from getting myself and my bike f'ed up. just really
Excuse my language had to vent with the bikers

next time get his license plate # and call in a complaint to the police.
glad to hear you were able to keep it on two wheels. in retrospect, could you have done anything differently to prevent this from ever happening again? |

I just don't know... guess I'll try to get far away from dedicated turning lanes and just blow by people that I'm passing instead of doing it somewhat leisurely. But I'm telling you I could look right at his face being right next to me as he came over. I was kinda wobbling a lot from the front locking up next time maybe i'll take my hatori hanzo out with me. Yeah I wanted to get his license number but he turned onto the highway immediately and there were two more bikers coming from the opposite direction so he cut them a little close to, but nothing the others couldn't handle.

Well see this is what really makes me feel like he said f me cause like I said he kinda just stayed next to me, It was like he accelerated a bit more then came over and then continued to push me over. I would have accelerated past him but there was more traffic that was coming on the road, and people like to just go right through that little right turn triangle with the lane for you to turn through. It really aggrevates me that my bother can't have his license just cause of some speeding here and there (No accidents and never cut anybody off and he is much older than me) but some jackass who nearly kills me or f's me up can have his. Just baffling

wow...a-hole is an understatement. its disrespectful drivers like that, that freak me out about the whole riding a bike thing. I'm so happy you're ok and it all turned out to be a scare.
Kelly, how would one get a license plate number down while riding on a bike? |

I had some cellphone yacking SUV soccer mom look right at me, and then deliberatly pull over on top of me to try not to miss her left hand turn, which would have pushed me into opposing traffic...and yes, her SUV is now sporting a size 12 Joe Rocket boot print. I didnt have any other choice. I wasnt about to slam on the brakes and have the car behind me run me over...and there was no way I could have accelrated out of her way in time. After she realized I wasnt going to let her kill me, she returned to her lane, slowed down behing me, and then turned left...from the right hand lane....in front of a car behind me.
The way I look at it is this. Im in MY lane...its MY lane. And if you violate MY lane and threaten MY life...Ill take whatever aggressive action necessary to prevent you from killing me. |

I do, a ContourHD, but it's so wide-angle that its resolution isn't good enough for plates if they're more than a couple car lengths away. I work on memorizing them, can keep two separate numbers in my head long enough to write them down at my destination.

You can pull over right after the incident when it is safe and call the police then. That way is nice because everything is free in your mind. Hopefully Sailariel will see this and chime in, they encountered someone with serious road rage and called the cops right away.

Give the driver a break. It's hard to text and pay attention.
Next time you do need to get a license plate number and call in a wreckless driver (attempted murder) complaint.

Slow down, speed up, lane split, just do what you have to do to put distance between you and the cage. From reading your account you should have downshift a few gears, go wot and let him read your plate number. Hard to tell without being there but glad to hear your ok.

though i'm not a big fan of people ruining others property, I have a friend that rides, and he tells me that the best investment he's made are a pair of nice steal toe boots. He drives in the downtown area alot, and people that live in South Cali know how hectic it gets during rush hour. he's been cut off so many times and gotten almost run over, so with his steal toe boots, he kicks peoples side mirrors in to teach them a lesson. Not sure how that may work for him, but i'm sure the people that don't look out for motorcycles will learn to after they have to invest in another side mirror.

Around here, police attitude is that if you're not dead in the ditch then it didn't happen. They don't classify any incident that didn't involve physical contact as worth pursuing. I've even showed police video and they dismissed it out of hand. I mainly have the camera so that when they find my broken body in a ditch hopefully the camera will have who did it on video.

In Albuqueruque they have such a catch 22, its illegal to talk on your phone while driving in the city or in Santa Fe also, so you see the "report people talking on thier phones" signs around... But to make the report you need to CALL the police non emergency number!!! Risking getting a ticket for talking on your phone while driving!!!

I try not to get in between a vehicle and a freeway exits/turning lanes/cross streets. I know turning lanes and cross streets are not as easy as you say but I try as much as I can. On the otherhand freeway offramps are much easier so I never position myself between a vehicle and an offramp. Unfortunately it's not uncommon those cell phone yakking/texting aholes decide to do last second exit/turn.

I agree with kkim. You are going to lose against any car or truck. Best thing to do is avoid these situations as much as possible.
These are the laws I ride by: Never ride next to a car. If possible, accelerate past the car. If not, leave enough room for a car to get over. If you see someone talking on the phone, get away from them as quickly as possible. If you see a soccer mom, haul arse! On the highway, never be in a lane that merges with an on-ramp. Tailgaters, let them pass. Stay far, far away from seniors. Never ride in the right lane, unless turning. You never know when someone needs to slam on the brakes to make a quick right turn. All of this is compounded by the fact that we ride 250s. It's not like you can out run most cars. You will be in a really tough spot if someone wants to retaliate. Just avoid or keep on moving if you can. |

I agree with Gogokawi, I ride by almost the same rules, I stick to the center lane on a 3 or more lane freeway if possible, avoid the wall side, on three lane roads I follow the same rule center lane gives 2 options of escape right or left. on two lane roads I ride in the right lane on the left side of the lane and never NEVER ride in a cars blind/death spot or allow a car to be in my blind/DEATH sopts. give yourself as many escapes as possible. you will never win vs a car and don't want to piss them off!

Thanks for the advice, I'm still a noob I guess. This is kind of why i need some experience people to ride with so I see how they ride and their techniques to avoid issues. I do try to follow those rules a lot like the MSF taught. But I guess I shouldn't waste any time if I'm going to pass someone. Lol and I just checked my bike and I see we traded a tiny bit of paint luckily it was just the ninja sticker, but its not that noticeable. Guess I will buff it out this weekend.

I would have to side on the non-contact direction of this topic... does kicking a door really make more noise than a horn? is it more recognizable to someone that they're encroaching on someone else's lane? is coming close enough to a cage to contact it with your foot really safe when they're coming towards you? i would think a horn + avoidance would be the best answer to inattentive drivers. i always try to stay in a safe spot away from side-traffic and blind-spots. stupid inattentive people will always be stupid and inattentive, no matter how many doors get kicked in. people who only use their mirrors to look will always only use their mirrors until they kill someone. just make sure you're not that someone!
perhaps a horn upgrade is in order!

I always ride with the attitude that everyone is ready and willing to run me over. That way I'm ready for any surprises. I try to ride so that I'm not in other cagers blind spots (which is sometimes hard to do in bumper-to-bumper rush hour traffic). I've resided to the fact that 98% of the driving public (at least in the USA) are complete morons and the only requirement for getting a license is having a heartbeat. I've had my Class A commercials license for over 18 years. People in cages are just plain dumb (not all, but most).

Yep I'm going to have to ride with that mentality cause that mofo for sure was willing to run me over. I definitely try to stay out of other drivers blind spots even when I'm in my car so I'm somewhat used to trying my best to stay out of blind spots. It is very funny though how easily someone can get a license to drive. There is so little that a person has to do to pass its ridiculous to me. I'm going to have to plan my routes more too I guess so I can be sure to get out of these kinds of situations or avoid them all together by strategy
