Ninja EX250J to EX250K FI Conversion

Hey Guys, I am from Adelaide which in Australia, first time posting on any of the forums, sorry if there already has been a post about this somewhere on this forum, but I couldn't find it.

Here we go, I have bought a myself a black 2012 Ninja 250R Carby with a blown tyre and not running for a bargain. I since then have replaced all wheel bearings, got the rims sandblasted and powder coated red. Bought a new drive chain and with some advise from this forum bought new 14/47 Sprockets and got it running. I also bought a two brothers exhaust for it, some sick RGB LEDs, modified intake box and at some stage later I want to Turbo it.

But for now my next stage is converting to fuel injection using the wiring loom and throttle bodies from a European 250 (EX250K). I have been studying the diagrams of both K and J models right next to each other, and have a few questions that I was hoping you guys will be able to help me out with!

1) I have noticed that K model runs a bigger alternator and has a different ignition timing will this be problem?
2) To make fuel injection system work I will need a to change a few things:
Coils, Wiring Loom + ECU, Fuel Pump, weld O2 sensor and Temp. Sensor. <-- Is there anything that I am missing before I do go out and import wiring loom and throttle bodies from England?

Thanks guys for all of your help!
BTW really love this forum.

Howdy and welcome!

You’ll also need the flywheel/ignition rotor from FI version.

The difference in ignition timing won't be a probblem, the ecu swap will change your ignition timing and possibly rev limit, but it will still run fine. You do need to make sure that your flywheel has the same pickups that the K has which IIRC it doesn't, but its been well over a year since I last looked at efi swaps.

Thanks for speedy responses!
So I will need to change flywheel aswell.
What about an alternator and battery being bigger capacity on the K model? Or the stock one from J should be still supportive enough?
Also A bit harsh saying that I suck at riding

The battery and alternator should be fine.

Don't take it to personal.

Also did the K model have 1 or 2 O2 sensors?

It has one oxygen-sensor at 2-1 merge collector in exhaust.

You'll also need stick coils as well. They are lower impedance than carb model and ECU does some kind of monitoring of coils.

Plug-cover's pretty cool!

Luckily with EX250K harness, it plugs right into stick coils.

Anyone decoded EFI mappings? Or know anyone or site that has?

I'm wondering if ignition has 3D mapping rather than previous carb generation's 2D RPM-based curve. Would be nice to have more ignition under partial-throttle as it really improves low-end response. Yet leave WOT alone.

You also have to figure something out regarding the gas tank, since the fuel pump is in the tank on the fuel injected bikes.

Awesome Thanks guys for the responses.

Do you guys know if the ninja 300 throttle bodies are exactly the same as the 250Ks One? (There are plenty of 300 here in AU)

I was looking at getting an after market fuel pump from a different bike that can be wired in. (Any suggestions?)

Does anyone know the part number for the flywheel that I need to get? (Or picture so that I do not get it wrong lol)

How hard would be to chip the stock ecu to get it dynoed? Or should I just get an aftermarket one? (I have heard of Microsquirt, but haven't looked into it yet)

Thanks mates for awesome suggestions, I am getting really hyped at the moment.

Now you're starting to see that swapping to FI isn't easy, lots of details to nail down.

Nine years ago I did the swapout to FI on my 2005 EX250. I kept things as simple as possible which meant doing a "fuel only" conversion. I left the OEM ignition control (CDI box) on the bike for the spark.

The bike has been running great for almost a decade now. This spring my daughter wants to learn to ride so I'm using that as an excuse to upgrade the bike to a better standard of build.

I originally used a Microsquirt V2 ECU, but now a better version is available, the V3, so I purchased one. I'm also going to install an EX300 alternator rotor so I can implement full ignition control.

Because the EX250 fuel tank has an old-school shape (internally) I couldn't use an in-tank fuel pump, so after some research I chose the external pump that Honda uses on their TRX Rancher 4-wheeler ATV. It's great because it's cheap to by and it solves a lot of FI system needs: it is a self-contained unit that includes a fuel pump, a sock-type fuel filter and a 3-bar fuel pressure regulator. And the aluminum housing of the pump acts as a secondary reservior which makes it an effective "swirl pot", preventing air bubbles from causing fuel flow issues.

Crows!

They're different:

250 30mm part# 16163-0113
300 32mm part# 16163-0750
