[visordown.com] - Yamaha reveals new electric bikes

The Yamaha PES2

And the PED2

LAST year Yamaha’s Annual Report suggested it would have versions its PES1 and PED1 electric bike concepts in production by 2016 - and while the schedule might have slipped a bit since then it does have two new electric concept models to unveil at this month’s Tokyo Motor Show.

The PES2 and PED2 are very much along the same lines as the original concept machines, but with new motors, frames and styling as the project edges towards production. Interestingly, the road-oriented PES2 gains two-wheel-drive and a weird single-sided fork arrangement.

Here’s what the firm has to say about the new concepts: 'In addition to the characteristics unique to an electric motor, these two EV (electric vehicle) motorcycle concept models have an operational feel that will seem natural even to today’s motorcycle enthusiasts and they achieve a new kind of riding experience that will inspire the Passion in riders. The Street sport “PES2” and Dirt sport “PED2” share a new power unit (Yamaha Smart Power Module) with a monocoque structure that also functions as the frame.

The PES2 on-road sport model has an additional electric motor built into the hub of the front wheel to make it a 2WD motorcycle, and it is designed to pioneer new boundaries of performance never experienced before. In contrast, the PED2 is a partner for hitting mountain trails designed to capitalize on the clean, quiet performance character of an EV to better enjoy riding through the natural world. Both models are equivalent in performance to Class II (50–125cc) mopeds and motorcycles.

[PES2] Length x Width x Height = 1,920 mm × 680 mm × 1,060 mm Motor type = DC brushless motor Battery type = Lithium-ion (detachable) Vehicle weight = under 130 kg [PED2] Length x Width x Height = 2,045 mm × 775 mm ×1,205 mm Motor type = DC brushless motor Battery type = Lithium-ion (detachable) Vehicle weight = under 100 kg.'

As long as there are other inputs on the system, improve it.

there are a few makers that have 2wd systems out there, christini comes to mind. Unfortunately they are really only useful for average or below average riders in off road scenarios less straight out mud bogging and crazy rocks that mere mortals would never consider riding. The front wheel on most modern dirt bikes is typically only pawing at the ground when under acceleration the added weight of a front drive system is really just not worth it.

once you develop hard enduro type skills there is little reason to have a 2wd bike. JMO

I can't wait for the new tech Awd motorcycles to come into the market! The benefits for dirt bikes are obvious but it seems that it has a lot of benefits on the street too.

The benefit would be the front tire wearing out as quickly as the rear...

Why put 2WD on a scooter? If it was a rabid power house like a Mission I could see it, but maybe they're hoping to employ it as a safety feature like ABS.

glad they're putting some money into this however.

I don't know, I could get by on about a 30-35 mile highway range if they took a type II fast charger, or recharged in less than 8 hours.

But, the article says they provide the performance of a 50cc-125cc motorcycle. My commute to work is almost all highway and that's not enough performance for me.

It doesn’t say how much power the PES2 makes, but it does have two brushless motors driving the wheels. The front motor is located inside the wheel hub, while the rear one is found within the chassis of the bike, driving the rear wheel via chain.

Energy is stored in a removable battery pack that is also apparently part of the bike’s structure. They call it Smart Power Module and we presume you’ll be able to carry it and charge it indoors – this could make the bike much more useful to more types of riders.
You could keep one battery charging at work and charge the other battery overnight at home.
