Crescent Suzuki has announced the first of its World Superbike signings: Englishman Leon Camier is to race for the British-based team in WSBK in 2012. The annoucement that Crescent would be switching to the World Superbike series from BSB earlier in October led to a flurry of speculation on riders. That Camier should be signed is not too much of a surprise: having a British rider on a British team is a no-brainer, and Camier's experience in WSBK is also welcome.

But it was a surprise that Camier would be the first rider to be announced. It was widely expected that John Hopkins would be the obvious choice for Crescent, the American having come within a few yards of winning the 2011 BSB title for the team this year. But with the MotoGP silly season still underway, Hopkins may be holding out for a seat in the premier class, the former Suzuki MotoGP rider still thought to be in the running for a seat with the LCR Honda team. If that falls through - looking ever more likely, as the seat is likely to be taken by Alvaro Bautista if Suzuki pulls out of MotoGP - then Hopkins will remain with Crescent and race in World Superbikes.
