Keeping rear wheel clean
When I lube my chain some amount of oil and other debris builds up on my rear wheel and its a huge pain to keep it clean. What methods do you guys use to help prevent this?

Different chain lubes are better or worse in flinging off and getting everywhere. If too much is applied, it gets even worse. I've had good luck with Maxima's chainwax, and people seem to like the Dupont stuff as well.

Use a chain lube like Maxima or Dupont Teflon Spray. These 2 tend not to fling if applied correctly. Use a rag or cardboard to cover areas to prevent over spray. Lube a section at a time and let it dry in between applications.

Using a large piece of cardboard really helps as well. Cut a round notch out of it so you can slide it forward between the wheel and the sprocket, and presto! Temporary lube guard for when you apply chaing lube.

Big piece of card board. Cut a semi-circle shape out of it so the cardboard goes further over the cush drive, covers more of the rim, and keeps it clean.

you know, you're allowed to wipe down the wheels with a rag when they are dirty... the chain lube even helps to clean the dried crap on there off with the rag

Eh, then it gets on the tires too. I'd rather just not ride in rain, and not goober up the rim with chain lube. That's more cleaning work.

Some WD-40 on a clean rag and all the gunk on your rims wipes off easy.

Or just leave it dirty. Nothing bad will happen.

Just buy a bottle of tire cleaner and try and not get any of it on your chain. I use it whenever I clean my bike and it just cuts through road grime on my tires and rims.

Yeah, but it'll pick up grime that much faster. Ask me, the PC'd rim owner, how I know.

I've been using Meguiar's no-scrub wheel cleaner on 'em when I wash the bike and works rather well

This. I don't put tire shine on my wheels, just use cleaner to get rid of grime and dirt. You wash the tire off with water afterwards so nothing stays on anyways. I also use another brand which I can't remember, but it works well. |
