Full coverage is running me just over $10/mth; but I have a spotless record and a lot of other policies (auto, home owner, umbrella, etc.)

I got my bike when I was 20 and it was $100 a year for liability from progressive. I also didn't take MSF right away, if I were to add that on it'd be like $85 a year. For full coverage for it'd be around $300ish. I also have two speeding tickets for doing 10 over..... but they didn't add any points most likely because I was the only one on the road going down hill both times :P

RyderRider is on par with me. I'm 20, no previous riding experience, no msf course, and no accidents. Progressive quoted $81 a year for liability. Full coverage got up to around $300 with your standard, middle of the road comp/collision. Can't remember the specifics. $500 deductible I believe.

State farm just called and changed my rate from $28 a month for full coverage to $82. This is because they passed this new policy that they wont count my previous driving years towards my motorcycle years, and since I just got my motorocycle license, I'm considered a brand new driver.

So... now I need to change policies which sucks because I was under my parent's bundled auto insurance. So my question, if I financed through the Kawi Card with Captial One do I need full coverage in California? I hear the answer is No but the info online is kind of dated. I read everything that I signed to get the bike and insurance isn't mentioned anywhere.

No you do not, the bank will have a lien on the bike but because it's credit and not a loan you are not required to. However, it would be stupid not to

+1 for older bikes

I would have paid $75 a year just for liability, but now I'm up to $120 with comprehensive ($100 deductible) and a little medical. I guess getting comprehensive was a waste of money, but for an extra $15 bucks I will at least get a few hundred bucks back if it's stolen. That was a main concern considering how easy it is to pick up and put on a truck.

I'm only 20 years old

lol, it would seem so...I'm not really good when it comes to reading fine print, I just went with geico because I had the car insured by them and thought it would benefit me to stay in the 'family'...turns out they were raping me.
Anyway, I've broken my shackles now...and probably will shop around for the car's as well....yet another life lesson learned

I'm 31 and married. All of our insurance is through State Farm. The ninjette runs about $540 a year with a $250 deductible and 100/300/100 full coverage in central Arkansas.

I inquired about a Ninja 1000 recently and that wasn't pretty. State Farm wanted $117 a month. I'll buy that bike later on in life when more things are paid off.

@geeker do you have uninsured/underinsured? I'd highly recommend having that with a 250/500 policy

I do have those as well. According to my agent, 100/300/100 is as high as I can go. I even referenced your scenario when they asked why I wanted to carry coverage that high. They kept telling me a motorcycle can't cause that much damage to other vehicles. Haha

I am 18 with no tickets or accidents on my record. Have the automatic withdrawal discount and MSF discount. Liability through allstate is 20 bucks a month. Going to pay for 6 months of the policy at once next time to get it a little lower plus the possible deduction from no wrecks and being a year older. *knocks on wood*

Haha really? I know I can go to at least 500/1mil maybe even higher. I went up because that's the only way to raise the uninsured. I'd tell your agent "I'm not concerned about damaging other vehicles, I'm concerned about them damaging me."

Insurance thoughts (insight needed)

I'm a first time rider (age 28) and I'm about to insure the 2011 ninja 250r (purchased w/3000 miles). Is it worth while to get collision coverage as well? It adds about $300 a year. I figured maybe for the first year, but not sure if it's worth it for the ninja. I'll be riding, mostly, in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, CA. I drive my truck like an aggressive granny. 1 speeding ticket, got rear ended once, I backed into a pole once leaving work. This is within the span of 10 years, ever since I got my driver's license. I'm a fairly cautious and conservative driver.

Currently have no health insurance, therefore, medical payment and uninsured/underinsured amounts are a must, for now.

Here's what my coverage will look like:

Bodily Injury & Property Damage: $250,000 person/$500,000 accident/$100,000 property damage

Uninsured/ Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury: $250,000 person/$500,000 accident

Medical Payments: $25,000 each person

Comprehensive: $250 deductible

Collision: $1,000 or $500 deductible Not sure about this one

Uninsured Motorist Collision Deductible Waiver: No coverage

Uninsured Motorist Property Damage: No coverage

Roadside Assistance: Selected

Accessory coverage: $3,000 (Included)

Yay, a sensible person with good liability and underinsured coverage! Take it from me, you may need that entire 250k one day.

In most collisions you will be able to salvage most of your bike depending on how bad it is. I'd say you can part a crashed ninjette out for anywhere from $1500-$2500. Most accidents will total this bike, OEM plastics are very expensive. If you value your bike over $2500 I'd say get collision with a $500 or less deductible.

For example on my pregen I don't have collision, it's valued at $2000 and I have a required $1000 deductible. I'd get $1000 from the insurance if it got totaled or if I crashed it I could part it out for $1500. Just depends on what you want if that day ever comes

Alex, thanks for the merge. I was wondering why I didn't get any reponses.

Jiggles, thanks for your reply. It's definitely helpful. I think the bike is valued at $3500. However, I'm still undecided as to whether or not it's worth it because if for any reason I have to file an at fault (single vehicle) claim, my premium will double and so will my auto insurance (with another company). Then again, it's probably still to my advantage, at least for my first year.

On another note, I read an article that the average serious moto accident was around $300K in hospital bills. I'm still short $50K....

My medical bills were only $78,000 but then again I was only traveling at 25mph

according to this logic, a rider should get into an accident while traveling at a rate of 96.15mph in order to incur $300K worth of medical bills........J/K

I think as the rate of speed doubles the insurance bills quadruple

It's $30/mo for the 250 and $90/mo for the 600, but insuring both lowers my insurance down to $80 for full coverage.

Seems mighty high to me for basic (liability?) insurance. Been a long time since I was 18 though. Liability for me on a 650 is $97/year and full coverage is $287 a year... but I'm in my 40's. A woman at work bought a R6, shes in her mid 30's and her full coverage was $1200 a year like yours. $1200 a year for a 2-fiddy seems like a lot.

Well i just got the basic. 29$ a month and bike was only 2700 so paying 1000+ a year doesnt make much sense.

For real, why let insurance pay for damages when you can pay it out of pocket with all that money you saved

Ummmm because I don't have 300,000 in my checking account in case someone is seriously injured?? How much did your broken femur cost?

BTW, I showed my wife your video last night. Wow... what a shot of your femur breaking... honestly, you are lucky that didn't cut your femoral artery and bleed you out. You are lucky indeed! You a better man than me for laying there breathing heavy.

6 days in the hospital was only $78,000. That doesn't include all the tests physical therapy and doctor visits afterward.

I remember when I was on the ground, I was like I should make some more noise so they know how ****ing bad this is right now haha. Another thing that flew through my mind was what this girl I was dating told me when she broke her ankle. She screamed out when it happened and her coach told her, nah you're fine! It wasn't until she got to the sideline and she realized it was broken.

So with that thought fresh in my mind I did briefly think, wait wait, maybe its not broken, you're probably just being a huge pussy right now *try to wiggle leg* nope nope oh **** that thing is ****ing broken, ****.

Exclamation Insurance Premiums

I currently have an 08 Ninja 250 and I was looking to upgrade to a Ninja 1000 or Ninja 650. I called my insurance company and wow, here are the results:
2008 Ninja 250= $278 annual
2012 Ninja 1000= $4600 annual (considered Super)
2012 Ninja 650= $1160 annual
That is not even counting the financing fees. I cant believe how crazy that is. My 08 Ninja 250 cost me about $92 a month (financing and insurance). Just the 2012 Ninja 650's insurance is more than that and the ninja 1000 is unbelievable. I am 26 and have been to the MSF course. I can't see how anyone affords the "super" bikes. Now I just plan on adding some performance mods to the 250 and keeping it.

You need a different insurance company, my 650 was actually cheaper than the 250 and my 1000 is $1600 a year. Been riding for 1yr and I'm 21

I've got an '08 and and '09 Ninja ('09 is my son's who just turned 21) the ANNUAL bill this year for both bike was $110.00.

Bikes are not finananced so I don't carry have to carry collission. Both bikes together are worth about $5500 so I made the decision to not get coverage on the stuff that is my fault but that means there is no theft coverage either.

Tough call but say you get in a wreck and the bill is $1500 to repair the bike. Deductable is $500 (or a $1000) and if you clam it you get the difference from the insurance company but then the rate on the bike AND YOUR CAR(S) goes way up.... so I don't carry collission on them... another reason to ride a cheap bike - LOL

Same reasoning I went with, though I got collision (dont think i got theft), but nobody can drive worth crap around colleges. But yeah, it's a relatively cheap bike, so overkill on insurance isn't worth it to me.

Jesus. I only pay about $200 for the year for my 250. I'm 19 years old and have only carried a policy for a street bike for a year now. I think you're being bent over, badly. I've got good insurance too, not just bare minimum. I've got the highest coverage I can get for injury to myself, others, damage to other's property, uninsured motorist, etc. About the only thing that isn't insured is my bike (for collision) because I bought it for $500. By the time I pay my deductible and get a check for book value I'll be right back to where I started. With $0 and no bike. I figure if I wad it up I can fix it on my own for cheaper.
