So what is the petcock exactly for....

and when should I use it? Can someone explain the exact operation for each position of this valve?

prime: when the carbs are empty and you want to quickly fill them up (because you were servicing the carbs and you emptied them)

on: everything else.

edit: i see you have a pregen. that means you have a "reserve" option also. the petcock has two inlets, the normal inlet which is about an inch above the bottom of the gas tank, and the "reserve" inlet which is at the very bottom. when you start to get low on gas, the normal inlet stops sucking gas so the bike dies so you are aware you are about to run out of gas... then you switch to reserve and drive to the gas station, then flip it back.

There's a sticky thread in this section to the owners manual for your bike:

Kawasaki Website links: Parts Diagrams, Service Specs, Owners Manual

On pages 31&32 of the manual, it has a picture of the petcock and what all three positions should be used for.

According to the MSF, you are supposed to switch between off and on/reserve for every ride.
