My stupid safety gear caused a drop

I finally went down after 7 years of not even a hint of a close call. Went out riding around to get used to my new riding pants + boots and for some reason when I came to a stop my left boot's sole felt like it was completely stuck to the peg and would not budge at all. Down I went doing zero ****ing miles per hour.

The nice lady in a car behind me checked on me and commented oh it's good that your boots protected you. I just looked at her and said "honestly, these boots just caused the drop".

Snapped my left mirror, fairing got scratched in a few spots, stator cover got marked, bar end and the tip of the clutch lever got scratched, that's about everything I think. Yesterday my rear tire got popped while I was on the freeway, now this. My poor little 600

At least I didn't ding up the 250.

Nothing major, Dave.

We cannot ask for much more than seven years of not biting the dust.

Find the problem, fix it and roll on.

Glad that nothing really bad happened !!!

Thanks, guys. Just ordered a set of mirrors.

I guess what I learned from it is I need to seriously start lifting my foot off of my peg instead of my usual half-assed sliding it off. That might cut it with my A* boots on the 250 but my new Dainese soles really stick to the 600's metal pegs.

At least I lived up to the "ninja" sticker on my bikes; when I went down I did a sideways tuck and roll and ended up crouched on my feet, then went up to the bike and yoinked it right up. Style points +1 right there.

Have you been able to replicate the issue with the boot sticking? You may want to double check to see if it was the boot or you were hung up on something else.

Good point!! If you have a stand to put it on while seated see whats hanging up and if necessary break out the Dremal tool and do some re-shaping.

Glad your ok though!!

It was the boot + leathers. When I was first breaking in these boots I wore them with my jeans and the soles were sticking like mad until I started I guess lifting my knee up a tiny bit before taking my foot off of the peg. Now that I'm breaking in my pants the combination of having to deal with fresh leathers + stickier sole boots means I'll have to start lifting my knee a bit more than what I

As annoyed as I am about the whole thing, I'd rather take a 0mph drop over a 60mph.

Glad you're okay.

Anybody can make a mistake, veterans or beginner. just so long as you can identify what caused the down and work on it, it's not a waste.

when i ride, i'm constantly doing trial and error. foot placement, sitting placement, if i'm leaning in or sitting straight. none of those variables are a constant. they all depend on the conditions.

Drops at 0mph don't count. Would you count it if you were in your garage? Anything under 5mph doesn't count in my opinion.

I made it just under 14 years before a 60mph highside, if you are using my method. Using your method, I lasted about 10 minutes. Oddly enough, they were both on the same bike.

omg lol i was about to make the same exact type of thread, last night i was out riding, and on my way home from my girlfriends house, my headlight blew, so i had to use my high beam, and i couldnt see for $#!t, but i made it home, and my driveway was full so i tried to go through the grass, and i wore my brand new boots for like the first time in the rain and next thing i know, my foot slipped, and my ninjette was sunny side down luckily, i have frame sliders, and she just got a little dirty, no scratches or anything that i can see. glad that your ok too though

Dropping the bike not moving sucks. Always feel like it was preventable afterwards but there isn't much you can do in the moment.

Sorry that happened though man, ride safe.

Keeping the ball of the feet on the peg rather than the arc helps avoiding this kind of accident.

Also, quickly lifting the leg back up as soon as you feel something catches and holds may save the day.

After thinking about this all night and this morning I think the tidbit that I learned is that I need to make sure my foot is off the peg before the bike is stopped completely. And at the mean time I have to do a whole body turn-around to see behind me every time I'm scooting over to the lane to the left of me until my replacement mirror shows up.

I basically did the same exact thing at a stop sign on my first month of riding. Nobody saw me, though. Thank goodness. Had no trouble getting it back up and it didnt do any damage since it was a very slow fall.

I'm sure it'll happen again eventually. No matter how skilled you are I can see many unforseeable events resulting in a 0-mph drop.

Sorry to hear about your drop.

It is interesting you mentioned this because I noticed a similar issue when I went from my 250r to a 636. The foot pegs have a bit of a lip on the ends that act as a 'claw' to hold my feet on them, so dragging off the peg is much more difficult.

Glad you are ok (and that the bike is relatively ok)

Seven years!!! You had a good run. Albeit your first is nothing bad at all. My first my bike was practically totalled and I had to fight tooth and nail with the insurance company not to total it out.

Actually I need to clarify that. 7 years ago I crashed on an gs500 after not having any drops, dings, or scratches since I started riding in the late 90's in my teens. Then nothing even remotely close to a close call until this past weekend when I my rear tire popped on Saturday in the middle of going about 60 through heavy traffic and had to get towed and replace that, then on Sunday I had my standing-still spill.

That makes this even more aggravating since I'm used to not putting any dings on anything.

The heel of the boot stopped you from sliding your boot... I've almost done the same.

This is the same thing I have been preaching for years. I didn't have my Ninja for more than a month before my boots caused me to go down. In my case, the boot's sole came loose at the rear of the shoe allowing the heel to dangle. I didn't realize they were like that when I got on the bike. When I came to a stop, the heel grabbed the peg and prevented me from putting my foot down and over I went.

This is one of the reasons why I am so anti-boot. The bottom line is that its ALWAYS better to avoid an accident than survive one. Wearing gear that cause accidents is not a good idea IMHO.

Also, if you look at jiggle's crash video, it sure looks like to me that his boot stuck his foot to the peg for a split second which resulted in him breaking his leg. Thus, fuel for the argument that boots can actually make things worse in a crash. So while he reported no injuries to his feet, the accident left him with a mangled leg.

While I have looked, I have not found a pair of boots that both fit well and can be trusted not to cause an accident. So until then, I'm wearing my trusty sneakers.

After thinking on it for a month and checking different combinations of factors, I think what really happened was my boot got stuck because my foot's arch was on the pegs instead of my toes.

Reason for that is I had just slipped my foot forward to downshift, then immediately came to a stop. My work-around is move my foot forward to downshift to first, slide my foot back to having my toes on the pegs, then come to a completely stop then take my foot off.

And I'd rather have taken that spill at 0 and learn how to work with protective boots than going down on the freeway and break these tiny little bones in my feet at speed, tell you the truth.

Look closer at AXO boots. Those boots have the slickest (and thin) soles I have ever wore. So much so, I upgraded simply for that reason, foot kept slipping OFF the peg.

Which model? Also, because I've seen more of them that don't fit right than do, I'm not willing to order online. I have to be able to try it on first. That means I'm pretty much restricted to cycle gear and local bike shops when buying gear.

Define 'fit right'. You seem to be the only one having fitment issues with boots. You're not running a marathon in these things, hell, your feet are not even bearing weight for most of the time you're wearing boots. Unless your feet are really really funky (I'm talking like custom doctor prescribed orthotics), I think the problem is with your head, not the boots.

They don't come in different widths. Its one size fits all. If I tried to squeeze into the ones I've tried on, it would injure my feet far worse than any accident. No thanks. I'll take my chances with sneakers. But I'm still open to the possibility that someone may start making the width I need.

No I wasn't kidding. While I don't doubt that people do injure there feet in accidents (even my foot had some road rash after my accident), but there is mounting anecdotal evidence that in some cases, wearing boots can make things worse in an accident.

I've already mentioned my suspicions about juggle's accident. There was also a guy up in Daytona a few months back that had his leg torn off just above his riding boot.

But all in all I do suspect that the times that a boot helps is far greater than the times it makes it worse.

But when footwear always hurt my feet that's 100% chance that my foot will be injured. Without boots, I have what, a 0.00001% chance that I will severely injure my feet. The vaccine is worse than the disease.

So again I say that I'm not wearing boots that don't fit right.

Then there is the convenience factor. I know you're a runner. If the run start was 50 miles away, would you run in the boots or would you have to take a proper pair of running shoes and change once you got there?

I wish I could get work boots to work properly. Those do come in my size and I have some already. But they are too stiff in the ankle to work the pedals on the Ninja. I have worn them on cruisers with no problem.

But I'm not saying YOU or anybody else should wear sneakers, I'm just saying that I'm going to wear them pending a manufacturer making a pair that fits, that I don't have to change once I get where I'm going, and doesn't cost a fortune.

You see what you want to see. Kinda like those who see aliens.

Read your own quote below, and reconcile it with your quote above.

...snip...

This is one of the reasons why I am so anti-boot. The bottom line is that its ALWAYS better to avoid an accident than survive one. Wearing gear that cause accidents is not a good idea IMHO.
You can spread this crap wherever you want, but you can no longer spread it here. When a newbie posted elsewhere on this site "I heard boots can do more harm than good", it was the last straw.
